G'Day All,
I know I know...
Yet another flies post.
Sorry about that but I'm hoping this might give some definitive answers.
I have a 2007 Australian spec ZX-14 with quite a few additives including a PCIII USB with a personalised Jeffo map.
I have read so many "flies" posts but they all vary so much and just can't decide whether to remove them or not.
I understand that the 2006-7's will greatly benefit low down power wise from this mod.
But one thing I love is the smoothness of the throttle response on my 14 from low to high.
But the increased low down power is very appealing.
Will the smoothness be compromised so that the extra power is not worth it?
Or is the smoothness change minimal?
Is there any change in exhaust note or loudness (I have Yoshi R-77 slip ons)?
Some swear by the flyless setup and would never go back.
Some have replaced the flies soon after removing them.
I know some will say "Take them out and if you don't like them replace them" but I'm not keen to play with those soft temperamental screws too much and would like to get all the info before I start touching them.
If I do take them out I have heeded all the advise re a new #2 screwdriver and heating screws to melt the thread lock before hand.
What's the consensus with you experienced experts out there?
I'm keen to do it but I guess I need to know more first...

EVERYONE who ever removed flies on a 06-07 said this. DO IT!

But one thing I love is the smoothness of the throttle response on my 14 from low to high.

That will improve with flies out and the proper map. Do you notice a sudden surge of power around 6K rpm...that would be flies openning...unless Jeffo smoothed that out ????? Either way, you are NOT getting full power below 6K where you spend most of your time riding.

Everyone who did the flyectomy on an 06-07 reported the power curve to be much more linear with flies out. You will get more power and more predictable throttle response.

Perhaps a wee bit...not noticeable, really. HAHA the sound of the engine winding up quicker might be something you notice in sound change.

I recall that was something that 08-11 owners did. I have an 08 with flies out and IMO, it seems to be pretty dead on with mapping in the flies open range. Very smooth now. Pretty abrupt power spike when the flies opened before I got the map adjusted.

Good thinking, my man. The screwdriver X has been known to strip if the screw is not properly heated. Never heard of anyone stripping threads though. Thread locking agent hold s them in....I don't think they are very tight...mine weren't.

As long as you can get the bike tuned for it, should be fine. I think there were even those who reported the stock mapping with flies out to be a great improvement on a 06-07. I would strongly consider tuning (or a good map) though because those first 14s were a little lean way down low. Flies out makes it leaner, of course.


thats my .02. I have an 08 which was a different flies situation but I read all the old threads.

Yannih, you've got your 06-07 stories mixed up with 08- . Now go get that screwdriver and get the bike a custom tune. There is nothing worst than being leaned over at under 6k rpm and waiting impatiently for the flies to open: you go from the possibility of loosing the front to the possibility of loosing the rear. No bueno!

Well Gentlemen,

Please see below.

I won't listen to my wife but I'll listen to you guys...
The flies are out.
A couple of points if I may.
I had zero issue removing the screws. No head stripping or rounding issues at all like I have read some poor souls have had.
I put this down to two things.
You guys on this forum explaining exactly how to do it, and patience.
I went to buy a new good quality #2 phillips head screwdriver. It looked way to big so I bought a #1 as well. When I inserted the #1 in the screws it was a touch loose. The #2 was perfect. So #2 it was. Always listen to experienced people...
And I used a really hot soldering iron and stood there with the iron on the screw heads for a full 5 minutes each timed with my phone. It did nothing good for my back but when the 8th screw loosened with no issue it was worth every second. I also gave the screwdiver a couple of good taps with a hammer for each screw to seat into the head before trying to loosen. This seemed a good thing also.
There was one screw that didn't give first try. I didn't force it and gave it 5 minutes more with the soldering iron and bingo...
I'm a very happy camper.
I contacted Jeffo re the map he supplied me and he advised no need for a change. He said the map was good for blocking the breather into the air box and removing the flies.
All done now.
Looking forward to a decent ride to try out the changes.

Damn that was a good decision.
Went for a descent half day ride around some good fast twisties today and what a difference!
More power and torque down low and no sacrifice of smoothness. In fact maybe the bike is smoother now after the flyectomy.
Thanks for the confirmation and push guys.
Should have done it when I first got the bike.
Its just that I got feed back from 08 and onwards owners mixed up with the 06-7 feedback and also I admit I was pretty concerned about stripping the screw heads cause if anyone is going to do that it's me.
But all good and very happy.
