I remember building up Kawasaki 900/1000 drag bikes engines in the 70's as well, blowing them up, and doing it again, and again..... with big power, had to sacrifice the cranks pretty much, had to weld them solid to keep them from twisting. Street riding those bikes was hilarious, lots of power, twisty frames, no brakes to speak of...
I still build big power (relatively) vintage bike motors, mainly air cooled Laverda triples with big bore custom liners, custom pistons from J&E or Ross, custom cams ground in the U.K., custom Carillo rods, carb conversions to Mikuni flat slides, ceramic coating of piston tops/valve faces/exhaust tracts, low friction coatings of basically everything else that moves in the engine, etc. I send all the machining and coating out to be done to highlky qualified people I have had good previous experience with, but I do all the engine assembly and set up myself.
I have been wondering about a big bore ZX 14 build, Send the head and intakes to someone who knows what they are doing for the machine and porting work, send the bores and whatever piston kit to someone who knows what they are doing for overboring/clearancing, then assemble the engine myself, degree in the cams, etc. Is a ZX 14 really all that much nmore complicated than a 70's Kawasaki 4? I fully agree not to attempt the machine work itself, but I am usually happier if I do engine assembly myself so I know what is in the engine and flailing madly between my legs, not worrying about whether someone else properly torqued the rod bolts, if any.......
so, is assembly only of a ZX 14 engine really that complicated, and does it really need to be left to the pros...??
