Loading Bike On Truck, Safety
07/31/10 5:56 AM

Hey guys just making some small talk. My riding buddy was trying to load his GSXR 600 yesterday and made a very expensive mistake. I think you guys can probaly guess the rest but here it is.

He strapped the ramps two the truck = Good Job

He did not ask for Help = Stupid.

Hoped on the bike and lined up with ramp = No room to get a run on.

Let clutch out = No time to get revs up

Got to top of ramp = Panic Time

Stalls Bike = Now what ?

Pulls clutch in = Now going backwards.

Try put Feet down = Nothing under feet, to high.

Bike falls 180 on her back = What the F.ck Have I Just Done

Also equals VERY GLAD bike is not on top of me

Now in comes mister wallet

Bike Holiday Now at a End.

Needs bars, tank, mirrors, shield, signal lights tail section, brake lights lens, all fairings one side etc

And yup, the truck is ok.

If this makes any of you guys think twice before attempting this by yourself then this helps.

Rookie Mistake I know but he is not the first to do this and won't be the last.

Must be somethng in the air. I strppied a screw forcing it in last night while i was trying to install black out lenses on the busa. Thank god it will just take one trip to Home depot to solve that minor F-up. I guess your buddy will need to invest a little more cash than I will. but we will both get things fixed up.

The guys at the local shop (the one that was a HD shop before I was born, and is still around) often ride smaller bikes into pickup truck beds. They just don't stop until they almost hit the cab.

Me, I have never been so brave. I always get someone to help. Or two. Heh.

I've got a trailer I made from a kit back in the early 90s. The steel came precut with bolt holes, so it went together like an Erector Set. I took it to this old guy who had a welding shop with his son, and they trued it, tacked gussets all over the place, took the bolts out, and welded the whole thing up.

They also rehung the springs and axle (didn't suit them the way it was) and strengthened the tongue. I bet they increased the trailer weight by 10%.

Even though the trailer bed is only 1 foot or so off the ground, the only thing I ever drove up into it solo was my ATV. Always got help with the bikes over the years.

I use 2 ramps and have a second person help. I never try to ride the bike in because of above and never walk up the ramp with the bike running and easing out on the clutch because to much can happen. Those accidents can get be expensive. Plus I have a 3/4 ton truck that sits up pretty high anyway.

I prefer to just use a trailer but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

I like that gixer. They've had one at my stealer for the last two years ... no sale. Yeah, the mirrors are atrocious and the dual exhaust looks out of place on a literbike IMO. Hope your buddy ripped all that junk off andnow needs to replace with somethoing a lot cooler. T
his might have been a blessing in disguise.

If i was still married, I might have had to drop my bike by now to get some mods on there. That's a good scheme. Take note married guys. If you want to bargain with a woman, you need to think like a woman.

Same job, different technique. Scared the entire time. I was thinking my buddy passed the jinx onto me.

I rather not be buying new anything. No Fugly Mirrors LOL.

Great Trailer, 8 years old. Still does the job. I borrowed my buddies Harley trailer one year, never again. The Dame thing was to tall and was all over the road. I ended up burning 2-1/2 times the fuel and had to keep stopping to check the tie downs. It should have been dual axle. To much stress. This marsh mellow sits low and does not get caught in the wind. Toes nice because the truck is taller. I don't even know it's back there. I hope she holds up few more years.

Here are a couple of tips: I always take the seat off before riding my motorcycle onto my Kendon trailer, that gives me another two or three inches of leg reach. Second, I try to find a way to decrease the elevation by either locating the trailer wheels in a dip (on the curb onto my driveway) or backing up the trailer to a sidewalk and ride the bike on the sidewalk and then onto the trailer (works great at motels).

As mentioned earlier, the first choice would still be to get help.

Romans, I emailed you with the WERA link but I'll go ahead and post the link here too

Your text to link here...

This is the best place to source race parts and any street spares that guys don't need IMHO.

And speaking of trailers, I'll throw in some pics of my Thule 7x14 V-nose double axle trailer
that has served me more than well for a couple of seasons now

And with my 750, gsxr1K and a zx10r- it's set up for 4 bikes and most of the gear for a track day

Last week at Thunderbolt a guy behind me locked up his front tire and washed out
resulting in his bike slamming into the back of mine. I'm currently waiting for a new swingarm,
rear wheel, rear brake caliper and brake line, subframe and race tail section plastics.
Hoping to have the 750 up and running by the end of this week.

It's all on my tab.
That guy had to undergo surgery on his right leg and had a plate put in place of some badly broken bones,
he was hit by a 3rd bike while on the grownd and still tumbling.
Anythng that a swipe of a credit card can fix,
well, I'm glad to pay.

I'm glad to pay.

Better to pay with cash than to beat up the body.

If you need all those parts(singarm=hard hit)I'm very susprised he did not wash the back end out on your bike after making contact.

Another high side would be enough to break a mans heart. Nice driving.Cheers

Actually other than some scrapes, the worst damage on the swingarm is the broken spool slot and it can easily be welded back on but a mint swingarm on eBay from a K9 bike was $75 shipped and I didn't even think twice.
I didn't go down after the impact by pure chance and good luck, had nothing to do with my riding skills.

And this is why I highly recommend gixxers for track bikes- partrs are everywhere and dirt cheap!
