Thinking of getting a can am spyder for my wife
08/30/13 7:51 PM

Hi all, my wife has tried to learn how to ride a bike, but she just can't get the hang of it. I put an end to her riding lessons after watching her fall over a couple of times. 1st time she was setting still and we laughed that one off, but the 2nd time she had a little speed and locked up the front brake on some gravel and went down a little harder.
So my thoughts are a can am spyder, she'll have her own set of wheels...that don't tip over. If any of you have had any experience with or know anything negative about these machines please let me know. Thanks.

Hey man,
My best friend has one. They are not a bike but they are no joke. They are fun but if she rides it hard it could throw her off if she's not ready for it. It's like riding a Ferrari strapped to the hood! If you ride it like like a quad you can take some fast corners.

They take getting used to but are fun. We rode down to Deals Gap and I rode the dragon both ways. I made it to the bottom and back in 33 mins. That's hauling pretty good a$$. He pretty much kept up with on my ZX14r on the Cherohala. Granted I could have ridden harder but he hung with me

Anyway, my buddy has the electronic paddle shift, just peg the throttle and keep hitting the up paddle and the damn thing MOVES lol.

Most dealers have. Demo bike you can ride. If I couldn't have a bike that would be my next choice... But not the touring model, I didn't like that at all. Just my .02.

Let us know what you do. Good luck.

If the VA makes a mistake in either of my next two major surgeries (October, then March) I may end up having to trade my motorcycle on a Can Am. I agree, they are quite competent ..... errr..... vehicles. :)

I test rode the Cam Am Spider and was utterly disappointed. The front wheel, turn direction side would loft into the air on high speed corner. She had no balls and I felt like there was vibration everywhere. I rode like an idiot and was almost kicked off the track. One of our group members said it does nothing well like a bike can do, and everything bad that a car can do. I'd rather buy a car! Please take one out before you buy. Here they are 22000 - 30000

The idea of having that front lift like that...just scares me;)I wouldn't advise getting one unless you intend to ride pretty conservatively.Seems it would be easy to get crossed up real quick and not realize it until....and what about evasive fast manuevers.Shit...it could hi side ya right into an oncoming car if conditions were right...no thanks.

Thanks for your input guys, I think a test drive is the next step. My wife isn't an aggressive rider/driver so I doubt she would have a problem keeping the wheels on the ground. We've been looking some and she's digging the sport touring model. Its got more upright seating position and removable givis on the back. I'll post some pics of the new member of the family if she likes it after the test drive.

I'm telling you, if you cross up a spyder you REALLY FUCKED up lol. Like I said, I ran the dragon on my buddies. My biggest fear was getting tossed off of it, and I did raise the front wheels up a few times cornering hard.

It's not a 14, but if you understand it's not a bike and won't ride like one you will enjoy it. Best description is that it rides like a high performance quad. This also means that you will not feel good about running over 120 mph. It's gets twitchy at high speeds.

Lol Grn, UR right. Never noticed that before, it does kinda have ears pinned back look.

The biggest issue I have with my buddies spyder is that it looks like it has the face of a cow lol. He says the same thing.

Ps, blue will scare the crap outta you ;-p

given the choice between a moped and the can am, I'd take the can am, and dump the engine for a Frankenstiened 14! lol!

I couldn't handycap the 14 like that. The rotax 990 motor has a lot of power, and that is what they run on the Aprillia bikes but it cannot hold a candle to what the 14 puts out.

But there is something to be said for the feel of the V4 motor.

On that same note tho, my buddy, pictured above, has a crazy cousin who dropped a 250cc 2 stroke into an 80cc pocket rocket and about killed himself. That thing was crazy lol

Omega2k, Thanks for your input. I know there's a lot of electronics on a spyder, do you know if your buddy has had any issues with any of that stuff? Thanks

I had read in an article that Bombardier had equipped the Spyder with electronic counter measures to prevent flipping it over.

I read that too Hagrid
from a review....

"The Spyders also have several electronic systems that promote safety. Besides ABS, there is a Traction Control System (TCS), an Electro Mechanical Parking Brake, Vehicle Stability System (VSS), Digitally Encoded Security System (DESS), Dynamic Power Steering (DPS), and the Stability Control System (SCS). I inadvertently activated the SCS on a curve when the inside wheel separated slightly from a rough section of pavement. The Spyder immediately reduced speed and re-established contact between the tire and the pavement."

My wife also wants a Spyder. We went and test rode one. It is different, you have to brace your outside leg so you don't get thrown off the outside on turns. But I actually liked it. The biggest thing I liked was that you didn't have to scan the road every second for potholes, gravel, dead armadillos etc. You just relaxed and rode. I thought the power was pretty good. We rode the touring model with the auto trans and ABS. The auto has paddle shifters you can click up through the gears. If you get lazy and don't feel like downshifting it will go back down automatically. After I tried it out I got on the back and my wife rode me around in it. She hasn't ridden a bike in around 4 years but she got right into it and had no problems with it. In fact, for a long trip I think it would be a very good choice. Just relax and look at the scenery. Most if what I remember about trips I've been on is the road surface.
So, she is currently saving her pennies for one, however we are going to look for a used one. The dealer quoted a price of around $30 GRAND!!!! I can buy a frigging Challenger for that much! He did say there was room for negotiations. I guess so!

Wolf; I think he's only had that paint for a couple races, so no replicas at all yet.
