Those lil bastids are hell in the twisties
05/03/15 6:57 AM

I had a wonderful day of riding in the twisties yesterday. Near the end of the day. I pulled up behind a guy on some kind of dual sport bike. It had a double undertail exhaust. I thought it might be a KTM but I can't find one online with a dual undertail so maybe it was something else.

I know the roads we were on pretty well. Something about the way the guy was dressed (older guy, my age with work boots and pants---) seemed to suggest he was local (this was near East Troy, maybe it was an out of work Buell employee). He obviously knew the road well also. After all was said and done, I have to admit this guy was noticeably faster in the corners but I'm happy to have just kept on him. These roads have so many corners, it would have been easy for a much better rider to lose me. LOL He tried to lose me on the straights going into town but that was no contest. I followed the guy into town where there was a huge Harley party going on. I stopped at the stop sign and away he went. I tried to find him on the road out of town but apparently he stopped at one of the two Harley bars or he went somewhere else. Woulda been nice to thank him for the best riding I had all day. i was pushing that busa hard! Have to bring the camera from now on when I go on a day long ride.

Sounds like you came across an Aprilia v-twin supermoto.

That could have been it. I mostly saw the back of it. The mufflers were like small cylindrical cans. Maybe an earlier gen or maybe aftermarket exhaust. He was a-gittin' 'er and I was riding the busa after him as hard as i ever rode that bike. It's good to experience moments like that but really, that is too far out of my comfort zone. I know I would crash if I did that often. Wish I would have had the camera to catch that moment to remember.

Yes, I thought the same thing when I wrote that but the truth is the truth. At least I can take comfort in knowing he started out in front of me. If he would have started in back and ended up in front that would have been true disgrace!

I'm starting to think these cold roads we have 75% of the year are a HUGE factor in how fast we ride twisties compared to the guys down south. I've finally gotten my Pirelli down to the raised letters on the edge of the tread. ...just as I'm noticing the middle flattening off. I love feeling the rear end spin out a little as I'm headed into a corner but I do NOT dare to try that in cooler weather.

I had a little fun with a Mustang today on an onramp. It's a brand new ramp with a nice S curve to it. Unfortunately, there were stop lights near the end to meter traffic entering the expressway. I stood the bike up a little and braked down shifted to 1 which was too low and braked hard. Let the clutch out slowly and felt the rear lifting up. Stopped right on the line and here comes the Mustang. We both had red lights. He took off. I looked over and his light was still red. I figured "why not" so I slipped the clutch and did a nice low wheelie behind him. The guy tromped on teh gas and did a rolling burn out for about 4 seconds. Too bad the expressway was packed. That dude was lookin for some action. haha maybe better for us both. Racing in the expressway is asking for trouble!

Never had that happen.Spin out that is.IDK how you guys trust the rear end to get back hooked up.I've hit some pretty hard fast corners here...never had any slip at all(from the rear)....

It's smaller corners like onramps. I'm not doing that at 100 mph!

You've got wide open roads where you can actually go fast in 4th, 5th and 6th gears. I rarely ever use those to go fast. Kind of ironic, using top gears to go slow!

The KTM Duke 11 has twin undertail exhaust, but it does sound like an Aprilia.
