Tires? How old is too old?
03/30/11 11:26 AM

I have an opportunity to buy some tires from another local rider. Pilot Power 2CTs front and rear for $100. They are at about 90% and were taken off with the factory wheels for a wheel swap at about 900km. The date codes are mid 2006 but have been stored properly and look okay. How old is too old for a bike tire?

I hate to be pessimist but I would never put a used tire from some one else on my bike. I know a lot of people who get take offs from the race track and do fine. I just don't like to take chances on tires or chains, the two things between me and the road that can spell disaster. That being said, a tire is a tire is a tire. If it doesn't have dry rot it prolly has at least a year left to it.

Somethings not right the CDN 14 came with Dunlops, which in MYO were a terrible tire.If they are 2cts and soft and not abused you should be ok.I have a preference for Corsa III's.Last fall I bought new old stock because the III has been discontinued.Put a couple thousand klicks on them .Then away for the winter,Normally I have the bike on front and rear stands for the winter, this year I was lazy only a rear stand,I'll see in a couple of weeks if no front stand effected the tire.Sometimes I think were getting to anal

I would have no problem with them. Mount them and it they hold air and look good, run 'em. They got to be better than tires you already put a couple of thousand miles on. And you would have no trouble running THEM.

What's the worst that could happen?I don't think I personally would go with something 6 yrs old,and used.It isn't about tread and how they look totally.Gotta consider the chemical reactions going on with a sitting tire for 6 yrs.May appear fine.IDK.Sup to you natch.Definitely don't want to get a blowout at 170.

Aw wth...go for it.Probably be just fine.

170 is not a speed to cheap out on, common.

If you gotta ask... don't do it.

I will still have a look at them but am a bit hesitant myself.

Does this mean we should all pray for the 06/07 riders still on stock tires? 1000 miles a year is what a lot of bikes in Canada see. Maybe the 7 months at -40C preserves things??

7 months at -40 doesn't preserve a thing ,that will freeze the brass nuts off a steel monkee
