13v at battery - 10v on dash
09/30/09 4:31 PM

Bike wouldn't start today, and dash voltmeter read 10v, so I hooked up my charger. After 5 minutes it said fully charged, but bike still won't start and voltmeter still says 10v. I pull out my tester and the battery reads 13 volts, the charger is putting out almost 14v, but the bike's starter won't spin up, and the dash voltmeter reads 10 volts. Any ideas?

Check your grounds???? Battery may show 13 volts w/no load on it. Turn the key on and you have a bit of a load on it. You may have a bad battery that can't take the load...... I'd start with the grounds and make sure the terminals are clean and tight.....

I cried because I could not wheelie. Till I met a man with no motorcycle....

Sounds like the battery has a very high internal resistance. That's when they reach the end of life. It can happen from several deep discharge cycles or age.

THANKS GUYS! Bad battery. Put a load on it with tester and it was 10 volts fully charged. 4 year old battery, and bike sat at dealer for a while, so probably dead a few times. My '94 ZX-11 still had the original battery after 15 years, so I was leaning toward something more complicated.
