Marathon?
11/18/17 2:50 AM

Anyone here been silly enough to run a full marathon?

I did the Queenstown Marathon today.
Time 5:00:46
42.2kms (26 miles I think) plus 3 months of very solid training.

All running with no walking during the race so pretty shattered and sore at the moment.
Very rewarding and proud I achieved it but never ever again!
It's definitely a young mans game though there was some older boys that ran straight past me with ease.

Would have been so much easier and infinitely quicker on my 14...

That's awesome! I've thought about it but I wouldn't bother trying to compete with fast runners. I've never been fast even when I ran 5-6 miles/day. I ran with a smaller buddy and he taught me what fast was. My flexibility is worse but other than that, I'm pretty sure I can do what I did when I was 20. Maybe I'll try what you did before too many years go by.

Ah but thats the point Rook.

I have always been pretty good at sport. But when it comes to running in races/distances, bloody awful.
That was the challenge. Achieve something to remember and make it more meaningful because it's not easy for you.
If it was easy everyone would do it!
I've been told only 1% actually compete in and complete a full marathon.

I always knew I would finish way down the list but I was only racing one person.
Myself.

My numbers are nothing special to read.
Race Number: 1571
Distance: 42.2km
Time: 5.00.46
Position All: 1054/1564
Position Male: 626/842
Position Age: 50-59:114/150
But I did it and made the finish line!

If it's a challenge that interests you, give it a go Rook because it's bloody rewarding and something to remember for the rest of your life. But it will take months of training, effort and dedication.

Oh, and there is also this piece of metal that I'm very proud of...

Congrats. 42 friggin miles! 5 hours sounds good! 8 mph is not a slow run. 10 hours sounds fine to me. Maybe I'll give it a shot.

Big salute for completing marathon. Cardio training is grueling and I struggle to run a mile. I enjoy landing on toes seems to put me in the zone, although pro runners would not recommend that.

I hate to be the one that points this out Rook, but 5-6 miles a day IS really slow, that's only 0.375mi/hr assuming you ran the full 6 miles and only took 16 hours of the day to do it.

But congratz yannih on the marathon!

I ran a half marathon (13.1 miles) but never a full one. My official time was 2hrs 24 mins but I wasted 8 mins waiting in line for the bathroom at mile 7. It was brutal for me because I’m not built for running at all. I’m more of a weight lifter. I’m 6’1” and weighed 235 at the time.

That number they give you isn't just for sticking on your shirt.

Congrats on achieving your goal Yan Man!

I must say however, that you, and all others who run 26 miles at one time, are nuts!! I've always been thin and in good shape, even at times when I've been far from "active" ... yet I have never been able to wrap my head around the idea of just running and running and running, through pain and discomfort ... just to see if I can. HAHA! To each his own though, and I am absolutely sure it was difficult as hell

Extra, of course you are correct.
Being nuts helps quite a bit.
But doesn't each guy that's part of this forum have a little of that inside themselves due to the fact all choose to ride 14's?

Why do a marathon?
Probably one of the oldest answers going around.
Because its there...

Respect to all of you that run. I'm built like a cross between Incabod Crane and Frankenstein. When I run it's like I'm wearing cement shoes....it's just brutal. So I try to use a bit of walking, weight lifting and dirt riding to replace running. Of course I'm in real trouble if I ever have to outrun a bear...

Well, here we go again.

Just did the 2019 Queenstown half marathon on Saturday and I can tell you this.
21.1kms is a shit load easier than 42.2kms!

2:23:33 and that was with no bathroom break Nasty so don't feel too bad.

I do know I'm getting too old for this...

Awesome!Great job Yan.Most I've been able to do at one time was 10 miles(earlier this year on my treadmill).Gonna be gettin back into it though this winter. That's witha 5% grade. Not too bad for 67.I should say that's not running. It's walking at between 4mph and 7mph.With a 9% grade thrown in every second mile or so for several minutes.

Curious what you eat before you do this...night before and such.I drink electrolyte liquid mixed as I'm walking.Mainly tryin to burn up calories.Couple of months of doing that my weight around my middle dropped off nicely. My ligaments and such just can't handle poundin on the pavement with running.

Nothing special.
Pasta for 3 nights before race day and a few GU energy gels with water during the race and thats about it.
The thing that sucked the most was no beer a week before...

Congratulations again Yannih. You are an inspiration....for someone else that is...
I've really been slacking off on riding my mountain bike. The last time I rode it I was slogging
up a hill in my climbing gear, puffing like a Baldwin steam locomotive, and some little shit goes right past
me on a single speed BMX bike like I was parked. I was humiliated. So I nerfed him into the bushes...
The main exercise has been chopping wood with an axe because I don't have a log splitter yet.
Stupid trees....

and some little shit goes right past

Mad, let me tell you something to make you feel better.

When I was about three quarters of the way through the half marathon last Saturday, I saw and elderly lady who had quite a large backside, who had the ugliest most uncoordinated running style and who looked like she was progressing at a very modest pace indeed.
I thought to myself thats pretty unfortunate but well done for having a go.

It was at that point that I noticed she had just come from behind and was running past me!

I wasn't overjoyed but it is what it is...

Great job Yannih! My distance running days are far behind me now, as I stick to 2 hr brutal powerlifting sessions and sprints. I’ll always have that medal to look back on to remind me that I can accomplish something out of my wheelhouse if I want it bad enough.

So true Nasty.

I won't lie.
I'm pretty proud of my two medals.
They represent a great deal of effort and achieving something that was hard!
Without being disrespectful to anyone, if it was easy everyone would do it.

The harder something is to acheive, the more value is attached to it...
