Top Speed Limiter - how does it work?
01/08/10 12:13 PM

Hi Hub and all

I am going to run my 08 ZX 14 on the salt at Bonneville in the BUB SPeed Week late August/early September 2010.

I need to eliminate the 186 mph top speed limiter. I have looked at the Speedo Healer and the Muzzy's Bonnevill Pro, both of which appear to operate by intercepting the signal from the sensor that reads off the four edged trigger bolt and provideds the information to the speedo.

So far as I know no-one has as yet "cracked" the ECU for the 08 and later ZX14. I saw reference to the succesful "cracking" of the 06/07 ZX 14 ECU, with people working to try and figure out how to eliminate the top speed limiter directly in the ECU programing, but don't think that has been accomplished yet either.

But, bottom line, I need to know how the top speed limiter operates. Is it a fuel cut, ignition timing retard, intermittent power cut to the coils, what...?????? Is the initiator of the limiter the speedo signal, combined with gear position sensor, or....???

Thanks

Paul

interesting, Hub, thanks.

you disconnected the speedo sensor and bike ran great. I don't care aboout an operable speedo, as on the salt the bike will be timed anyway to detrmine top speed.

so, bottom line, with the speedo sensor disconnected, will the top speed limiter NOT work while the timing map and fuel maps still work normally?????

Hi Hub

where I live in western Canada it has been brutally cold for months, with lots of snow and ice on the roads, hovering around -20 for weeks at a time....so the bikes are in a heated garage, and the ZX 14 is on the Handy Lift in an advanced stage of dis-assembly at the moment. It will likely be late April/early May before the bikes can come out to play again, so I can't test ride for at least another 4 months, unfortunately.....

I could only say if this sheds any light? The UNCALIBRATED(factory)speedo is of course around 5-7 % off.So at 186 showing on the stock setup speedo-the limiter begins to cut power/fuel(?)This means that it is NOT actually hitting 186 in real MPH.It's actuating at the "errored" speedo reading.Don't know if that has helped any.I speedohealed mine with a GPS check. At GPS'd,186 or a bit more on the now "accurate" speedo,it kicked in.However-I think it does have something more to do with the RPM's-because I was hitting 11,250.As soon as I hit 11,500(didn't look at the speedo at that time)...it began to actuate the limiter. So I don't know if the speedo was reading at 186,or higher-it must have been somewhat higher with 250 more RPMS running?I've redlined my bike several times-not exactly on purpose mind you,but going up through the gears and hitting 11,5.The bike stops accelerating at that point with a sputter. So I'm guessing that the limiter is more set for RPMS than forward speed?I'm not anywhere close to 186 in second or third gear obviously.I can't tell if it's ignition or fuel that's cutting.I didn't smell any fuel fumes when it did that, like if there was still fuel being pumped in and not igniting. There was no backfire either when it re-started at the shift point or lowering the throttle and reopening. The Speedohealer(healtech)will allow the gear indicator to operate as stock. They say if you want to bypass the 186 limiter, you can set a second calibration in a second memory in the unit and set that to 99.99%.This will allow the bike to go WAY past the limiter. So it kind of seems like on one side,it's a cut from RPMS,and yet it seems that the actual "186" indicator software might be the key.

I could run my rpms all the way to 11,5000-that's where the "limiter" began doing it's deal. The Dash indicator was(is) 6th.It limited in every gear at 11,500.(every gear was also indicated in the dash). You know I wasn't hitting 186 in second gear.Or third,or 4th.Or any other. The best I could get was 182 in 6th with my 16/42 gearing.(11,500 RPM)
