Why I'm not going to use aluminum sprocket ever again
04/20/16 12:33 PM

So I felt a slip a couple time in the last 2 days, thought my chain might be loose but it didn't feel loose.. Checked my rear sprocket today and found the culprit.. needless to say I'm getting new front/rear STEEL Vortex sprockets and a new chain!

Aww heck, you got thousands of more miles of life in that sprocket...
Glad it didn't throw the chain and bust something important.

Here's the aftermath, 9 out of 41 teeth left (and those were on their way out as well).. replaced with a Vortex black steel stock gearing front/rear and a new black chain.

WOW!! That couldn't have happened all at once. I've got almost 10k miles on mine and it is showing a little wear but nothing like that. My steel front is showing wear too. I'd say it's a little worse than my aluminum Vortex rear sprocket which was installed at the same time. I think I will be changing both sometime next year.

Yeah, that sprocket had plenty of life in it. You just need to slow down

So how many miles did the rear sprocket last?

Aluminum sprockets are for racing, not for day to day riding. Way too much HP for aluminum, short of monitoring the teeth.

I get at least 20k miles out of an aluminum sprocket. It's ready to change when the steel front is ready. Perfect setup. The rear is easy to change too and only ~$60. I think the fast wearing roperties are probably due to racing. I ride mine hard and the aluminum sprockets hold up ok. Not nearly as good as steel but acceptable. They also do not corrode like the stock steel sprocket did.
