New pipes, looking for advice...
04/18/10 9:49 PM

First let me say a few things about my tastes...

I like the dual exhaust look of the 14.
I am not looking for massive performance gains.
I do not want really loud pipes.
I would like to spend under $1,000...

With that said here is what I've seen that I like so far.

#1 - KR Tuned Dual Carbon Slip-On's... STG has them for only $599.95 on what I assume is clearance pricing.

I can't find any video's with these installed on a 14, but in this STG video they show in detail how the pipes are put together and they look to be of very high quality... I just wish I could hear them.

#2 - Muzzy Dual Carbon Slip-On's... Schnitz has them for $770

This is a good but short clip of the Muzzy's... they sound low and growly, I like it.

I would like to buy a full system instead of slip-on's but I haven't seen any dual full systems. I also want something that won't require the installation of a PCIII as for now I don't want to spend the money on the pipes and that. I would rather look forward to that as an additional upgrade in the future, not as a must have.

I've read several of the threads about how aftermarket pipes tend to introduce either more pops on decel, or that they are just making them more obvious to the ears over the stock cans. I am fine with that, as long as its normal and I've read a bunch of comments on this from Rook, Romans, Hub, etc... so I'm not worried about it.

As of right now I am leaning towards the KR Tuned for looks. The matching carbon end caps, and canister band... very nice touches. I also like that they are only rated 2db higher than stock exhaust with the inserts and they are easily removed as well.

From what I've read from a lot of people here on the forum, I don't think I could go wrong with any Muzzy pipes and they seem to be a very popular choice. That sound clip I linked is great, I would rather have a lower end grunt than an high end ear piercing howl personally, but I haven't heard those pipes opened up either.

Any other suggestions? Am I crazy for even considering slip-on's??

I thank you in advance for any advice you may offer!

I think you are right on the money with the slipons, the bike was designed for two mufflers. Look at the MICRON stuff. The blue to silver fusion oval canisters look so bad ass on your bike, I'm talkin serious style. $1019.95. there are alot of good choices but remember you get what you pay for!

The muzzy slip ons do sound sweet, nice deep growwwl, if i hadnt found a full muzzy m14 stainless system for 720.00 I would have gone with the muzzy slip ons myself.

I have the Muzzy C/F's above. They are light and not too loud. I like the looks, sound and performance. I have 25,000 miles on them and they look and sound like the day I put them on. If you shop around you can find for less than $700 though.

IIRC when I weighed them they weighed around 13 pounds each with the mid pipe, the stock cans weighed in around 20 or so pounds each.

I also have the Muzzy carbon dual exhaust cans. I measured a 20 pound total weight savings versus the stock pipes.

Also, I added a PCV, removed the flies, installed a Jeffo map and ended up with 177rwhp on a Superflo dyno with a good air fuel ratio.

After 1,000 miles of use so far, I am very happy with the results. These mods really transformed the stock performance of the bike. Much better throttle response, low end power, no more hesistation at 3,500 rpms, and tons of mid range.

I bought the Muzzy CF cans from a board member for $475 in like new condition.
Also sourced the PCV from another board member for $200.
The Jeffo map was $50.

Keep an eye on the for sale section, these items are listed all the time.

Zxrider, what kind of torque numbers did you post with that set up. Mines identical on my 07'

I did not get a tq #, only HP & A/F. I would estimate about 105 or so.

Area P makes nice pipes. I've got the carbon / 2.5" cores and they are loud. Very deep with a nice "boom". The 2" cores are supposed to just have a bit more growl than stock.

The Area P cans do look nice. I like them because they dont have a big sign riveted on the side like every other company!

The Area P's have a logo on them when shipped but are easily removed if you choose. No rivets.

I can answer that one, they are the Pit Bull Rear SS which has both spooled and standard lifter and the "forklift" front stand. I can highly recommend STG from experience, and actually have one of the SS rear stands that has a removable handle and a set of the Pit Bull spools on there way to me right now. I personally don't see the point of not buying the SS since its only a few more bucks more and will let you lift pretty much any bike. I spent the extra like $7 for the removable handle so it takes up less room in the garage when I put her up for the winter. I'm going to get the front stand as well, but will probably wait till the fall since I'm really wanting it more for storage than maintenance.
