Update on Jay "Old Man"
05/18/17 7:16 AM

Spoke to Kay, Jay's wife. Jay is in and out of consciousness. Can't respond or identify people yet. Twitches his arms and legs. He was jogging and got hit by a bicyclist at around 30 mph. He's still in the hospital in Japan.
So, Kay feels that he won't be able to ride for a long time, if ever, so she wants to look at selling his bike. I believe it's a 2011 or 2013 ZX14R. The black and orange one. Has pipes, maybe a Corbin seat and is in immaculate condition. If anyone is interested in it or can give me an idea of what a fair selling price is, contact me here. I will get more details on the bike later this month.
Any messages you want to send to Kay I'll forward to her. Keep Jay in your thoughts.

Tell Mrs Old Man Rook sends all his best thoughts. The unexpected sure will blindside you but it will go back to normal or there will be a new normal. I'm hoping for a full recovery. Sounds like there is hope.

Wow, I'm very sorry to hear this. I had spoken to him on the phone a couple of times 3 years ago. He bought my Muzzy slip-ons from me (which he sold right away because he thought they were too loud). He seemed to be a very nice humble guy. Tell his wife I'll be praying for him for a full recovery.
Thanks Mad.

Sorry to hear about this. I suppose repsonses are slower because OldMan wasn't super active. After reviewing a few of his post seems like a really nice person. I will keep him and his family in my prayers.

His bike is a '14 sunburnt orange/met spark black (from post pics). I think he rettofitted Gen 1 cans because they look a lot nicer than the Gen 2, might be why there's some confusion on which model it is. No idea other aspects of the bike.

For all the gruff bicyclist seem to give people on the road I'd expect them to respect joggers. With some of the videos I've seen not surprising they don't. I guess I should be careful what I say, I don't know anything about the accident but I'm assuming it was a basic 2 people occupying the same space at the same time ordeal.

Oh crap, so sorry to hear this! Old Man bought a Corbin saddle from me and I dropped it off to him on my Sacramento/NorCal ride 2 years ago. His bike is definitely the R version, because the saddle was not a direct fit (from a 2006 ZX14), but all he had to remove the helmet holders from under his bike to make it work. Feel better asap sir, and remember, you don't stop riding because you get old, you get old if you stop riding!

Thanks Timo,
I haven't heard anything from Kay lately. Jay's starting to open his eyes a bit. No awareness yet. His brother visits him in the hospital every day. I'm encouraging Kay to have me come over, pour some Stabil in the gas and put the bike up on stands on a tender. If Jay keeps improving he may look forward to riding his ZX again. Could help with his recovery. She would have to get power of attorney to sell it since the pink is in his name.

Spoke to Kay today. Jay smiled when his friend came into the room yesterday. Still can't talk and possibly hear yet but this is the first positive facial expression he has made. Hopefully his brain in rewiring itself and things will start to accelerate from here.
Question: Did Jay discuss with any of you what insurance company he used? Kay doesn't know.

Thanks everybody

so, I went to Jays house and met Kay, his wife. Really nice lady. Put some Stabil in the tank and rode it to the station to top off the tank. His is a 2014 ZX14R, very nice. Feels faster than my 06. Got back and put it on stands and hooked up the battery tender and covered it and it's ready to wait quietly until we see how Jay does. He was transferred to a rehab hospital. Learning to walk and eat again. Still no talking or memory. But we still have hope as he is making gains and the brain has an amazing ability to heal itself. Kay says thanks to everyone for the thoughts and prayers.

I'm so happy to hear Jay is improving. I knew he was in the best possible hands. I hope the recovery continues at at a constant pace. Not surprisingly, it sounds as though it will be a pretty lengthy road. Thanks for keeping us up to date, Mad.

I hope the scumbag that did this to him was charged with some type of crime. Learning to walk, can't talk and no memory? This guys life has been changed in a nearly unfathomable way.

Glad to hear he's improving and I'm sure he'll continue to improve, I'll hope and pray for a full recovery.

Thanks for taking care of his 14. It would just be another mess to have to deal with down the road if it's not cared for too. One less mess for this guy to deal with eventually, definitely helpful.

Hi guys,
Well Kay is in Japan so I haven't heard any news. I will relay anything I find out as soon as I get it.
I'm hoping for the best. I read that Kenny Noyes was in a coma for 3 weeks and is expected to make a full recovery. He's 3 years into his recovery now. So, there is always hope for Jay, but it looks like a pretty long road.

The latest...
Hello Steve,

We are halfway through our stay in Japan and I would like to update you on how Jay is doing.

When we arrived 3 weeks ago, he did not recognize us. He just gave us a cold stare. Kids were very disappointed about it and so was I. He could not move,

talk, eat, sit up nor stand. But after 3 weeks now, we are seeing improvements.

He is gradually getting stronger. He can sit for 3min without support. He can stand for 3 min or so with help from a machine or therapist. He is now re-learning to chew and swallow by eating jello and drinking tea. He can hold a cup in his left hand and slowly drink tea by himself. ( he can finish 200ml of tea in 20min. )

We are seeing facial expressions as well. He smiles sometimes. Although he does not understand language and cannot communicate ( cannot speak or follow commands ) there are moments when we think he is understanding some of our conversations. He smiled at one of the jokes kids and I were telling each other. He smiled when a nurse bumped herself on the edge of the bed and cried in agony. ( How mean. LOL ) He smiles when we arrive at his bedside. Just this week, he started nodding to some of our questions and comments. Maybe 1 or 2 out of 10 questions we ask . ( he does not shake his head yet though. ) We get excited when we can share smiles. It motivates us greatly and I believe it is the same for Jay too. With the responses we get from him, we are enjoying the visits much more. Rehab. Therapists do great job on him everyday. Although the progress is slow, we are hoping to see more improvements before we return to US.

All these improvements are supported by your thoughts and prayers.

Also from the support from the members of BARF.

I feel very lucky to have so many people praying for him.

And please extend my appreciating to the members and friends of BARF.

I would like to keep you updated, and will e-mail you again.

Thank you Steve!

Kay.

Keep your thoughts for Jay.
