Secondary Butterflies and Advice
04/16/24 5:46 PM

Hey guys a hundred years ago when I bought my ZX14 I took out the secondary butterflies and also had the throttle bodies bored out I few millimeters and had the cams degreed in and valves done. Back then I was looking for all out power and now I’m looking for smoothness and maybe more low end. Lol Well there’s no going back because the bores were made larger but if I were to get a set of used ones do you think it would be worth the investment? I also have an auto turner on the bike and she’s more my hyper cruiser these days.

If your ZX-14 is 08 through 2011, the low end power is a more linear with flies out and the proper mapping. The power is restricted down low and you'll feel it come on a little suddenly with flies in. I can't speak to the increased throttle body bore. I would think your degreed cams would have the biggest impact on engine smoothness and low end grunt.

Thanks Rook! Yes she's a 2009. She runs great but the transition from completely off throttle to turning back on ever so slightly you get a pretty good jerk. I was looking to soften that jerk. It's almost like I had a quick turn throttle in there. I loosened up the throttle cables a little to try and soften it but that really didn't help. Maybe I'll try a little loser chain set up.

I got my 08 zx14 August of last year. I didn't have any information on it from the previous owner. It ran okay but I really had no reference. I rode it for a few months then put it away for the winter. I never felt the bike was not fueling well or nor did it have any flat spots or hesitations. It was running PC 3 and a full Hindle Exhaust. What I did have a concern about was the popping and flame throwing on Decel. It had 21 thousand miles on it so I decided it was time to check the valves. I figured it had not been done. I got the machine dissassembled and ran the valves. The exhausts were out of spec. While I was at it I decided to clean out the frame/airbox and replace the filter. I removed the tank and pulled the access plates, I was curios about the flies. To my surprise they were gone. I decided on a reflash. I pulled off the Power Commander and sent the ECU to TWO Wheel Dyno. I got the exhaust valve clearance into specs, replaced the gasket and plug tube seals, New plugs New stock air filter, Removed the Pulse air and filled the plates with epoxy, I used a come back clip to jump the wires on the connector. I put in a manual cam adjuster by APE. I sent a note along with ECU explaining that I had a full pipe no flies and stock air filter. I put it all back together with the v/c washer update because it was leaking oil. I finally got a break in the weather and took it out for a ride just a few days ago. It feels the same in first gear, second and third gear it pulls much harder, fourth fifth and sixth gear are pulling harder as well just not as pronounced. I notice that I am going to have get a quick shifter, it builds revs so quick that there is no time for the clutch. It is very very fast. Faster than it was. The decel popping is gone. The fuel map has obviously richened up the bike. Fuel economy has decreased a bit. At no time before or after the reflash have I had any issues concerning the flies being removed. It is an absolute joy to ride.

Some, the chain wont help. Throttle cables wont help. Flies will help. Stock cam sprockets will help. Sneeze screen taken off the the OEM air cleaner will help with smooth.

Yea 899, that's why I lost interest in other bikes. But the 14? An absolute delight.

Thanks guys she does runs great and I’m still in love with her for sure! I’m taking her on my 4th cross country ride the end of July and I can’t wait! I know the new Multi Strada RS would be a great bike to take but I can’t leave my trusted ZX14 behind. Just a little over 60,000 miles of pure joy! :)

She runs great but the transition from completely off throttle to turning back on ever so slightly you get a pretty good jerk.

My 08 did the same thing. It only did it in 1st and second gear and at low rpm. Close the throttle, open it a crack, nothing for a second or two then it would lurch forward like turning on a switch. I got in the habit of opening the throttle wider than necessary and then closing it down to a crack if that was what I needed. It was annoying. The bike did it from bone stock, brand new. Not even the AFR tuning I did solved the problem completely but I think it helped a little. I calibrated the TPS through my PC5 and I tuned for every TP in the map. The PC5 automatically modulates fueling numbers between adjacent cells to provide a good mixture for TPs and rpms that don't have specific cells in the map. The fueling between 0% and the next cell which is 2% should have been very precise after AFR tuning. I know the fueling for low rpm was superb because I could snap the throttle open at 2000 rpm in 6th gear and the engine accelerated smoothly with no shuddering. I don't know why low throttle at low rpm couldn't be addressed as effectively. That's the safest and easiest part of the map to do tuning runs on.

My next step would be to clean injectors and replace the pre-filter in the fuel pump. From what I understand, there's a filter inside the fuel pump that is not removable. I saw pics of it looking like it was falling apart in cut open ZX-14 fuel pumps. If you want to change that one, you have to replace the whole fuel pump. However, that might not solve the problem. Like I said, my 08 did this from day one. The problem never got worse as I would expect it to if it were caused by some clog in the fuel system.
