See that front brake on the BSA?
See the back tire is a dirt tire?
See the steel rims if that is a 190mm front brake hub?

Spank that bike right there she is not original and isn't it all about competing for points or a prize [trophy]?

Restoring is a tough-tough game. You know how I'd point? Run Dunlop inner tubes. Now that bike would have to match my tubes LOL! Where's the judge?

I see what yer saying hub I am sure the "judge" would pick them up on the same things, the picks aren't in order but the bike makers were all in individual groups,I am by now means smart about all these things you pointed out too ! sadly I should have asked more questions to my dad before he died when I was 23 years old,as he rode quite a few of these bikes in his day. ps i've added some extra photos from the day out (on original post mate)

Great pics bean !!! I have a 71 bonneville that was my father's. He used to take my sister and I for rides when we were young. Thats where my love for motorcycles comes from, I hope to restore it someday when money and time allow.

Yep, great pics, Bean. Thank you for sharing.

Here are two British bikes I tried to restore to a high point level. Try to compete with some heavy competition and you need to step it up just to compete. See, I'd love to get a hold of that A-10 BSA that is not correct. It, along with these two are the top of the A65 series as is that A-10, if it is a, "Clubman" I believe? Not me, but I read it in a book. I sort of agree. GP first. Hornet second. The Clubman was just that. Another race bike for club racing.

This dirt bike ruled Ascot dirt racing back in the day. Thing with this one is the correct frame and hangers. The engine case blew up when it lost a tooth and got caught in between gear shafts is my guess. If I kept the case and had it repaired, this would really be a 500cc Cyclone. I have everything new inside so it's a 650cc now.

See, I collected about 12 A65's to make about 4 runners. I took the best of the best and collected the lowest mileage parts I could find for both bikes you see here. The Hornet runs better than the GP10. Now, this GP bike had racing carbs when it first came out. Mike Hailwood won a TT race on this production model introduction for 1966. But, the carbs were thrown away for more stable an idle. You just could not buy one and expect to turn key a bike like this. It got a bad rap and it wasn't the bike, hint-hint.

So, to out-judge a judge's point score, you better be willing to say this was not part of the package when I have OEM new and used as if it came off the showroom floor without a part missing... Almost. So, the deal is, if that 190mm was not laced to a "Dunlop rim," it was as good as points off for that baby. Then I sneak up on the inner tubes kind of gain points back. Because you know no one saved any Dunlop tubes to restore most British bikes.

See, you know what needs to be corrected reading your score card, to make it a higher points bike next year. You show up with that Hornet that needs some cad plating and a minor few parts that are OEM, but not OEM correct for said model and you walk away with at least a mid 90 point score. It's kind of fun, frustrating, and challenging all rolled up in one. You just have to work the judge and call it to his attention about your competition in class. Then he has to score that higher points bike down he asks the question of say a pair of inner tubes.

Say Nothing!

Bean, someone in the family was a racer. Trickle down genes is why you hang it out? Yes, that is a very sought after bike. Especially the way that bike is in racing trim. Check that racing front brakes. This was how bikes manufacturers sold their bikes. Win the TT or the 200, then selling same bike was to make racing bikes for the clubman sport rider. One production [race] bike in one easy swoop out the door like today. Only today you buy kits. But, your dad had to have the remote float Amals back in the day. This Norton restored here is a Manx wannabe bike. Note the easy to start updated carb. Norton Manx 500's ran remotes before this style Amal became standard for Norton.

A non-remote-float Manx with a late Amal = Points lost. In hindsight, that bike was a keeper for sure.

Like most pristine restored bikes, they try to restore them back to some standard, but you can catch little things that can catch the eye of a good judge and if they know your bike, you need to prove that carb to that year or game over.

http://www.classicbikes4sale.com/Matchless_007.jpg Open this up. Line up your photo and begin matching part for part.

I see 1961 popping up on the Manx, so I now chased Matchless, 1961 and note:

1. Crash bars.
2. The Generator cover with the Matchless wings show that cover climbing off to the side as well.
3. Notice the fork assemblies.
4. Notice the single gauge.
5. Also, the front fenders.

In the family photo, someone may have installed a much fatter front tire to accommodate the wider front rim. Note how square and large the family front fender is, as opposed to the, and watch this; see how the rear fender brace is hanging lower in the family photo? Something is going on there as are the rain tires.

Think about it. Saddle bags in the dirt or are we a wet landmass kind of terrain. The bikes look clean and not moto-clubman kind of dirt-bikes with headlights? More like a daily driver for anything. Interesting setups.

See, now I'm getting confused with more fender to fender swapping. Here we see that lower rear fender brace and fork assemblies on this model. So, once again, are we seeing two different models with the same engine family? Note disc on the photo I sent in on the previous post for matching purposes and now serendipity, here we have matching front ends and engine family.

See how hard it is to be judging one bike after the other in mod mode. And they want to compete for points, right?

The girls sitting on the one bike is another model of the Matchless brand:

1. Front forks look the same.
2. Generator cover faces forward with this single.
3. Front fender too, has the large fender, and rear hoop fender brace.
4. See the insignia stamped into the genny cover.

This is again, early 1960's ear Matchless and Nortons.

I'm stumped on the smaller bike next to the rear-slab-genny cover Matchless. Those small shocks are key and if that is a 2-stroke Villers or something, I have no clue? How close did I get?

To tell you the truth, I was a judge for 8 years and learned a lot. I can hold my own with the BSA A65 series, and surface knowledge on the rest. I've owned more Japanese so I can see if the bike(s) hold true to the original.

See, you have someone with a zip tie and it was not period piece so you mark that down. Hey, you are restoring a bike and you should know your period piece or come back next year with a 99 point bike.

Some guy wanted me to score his bike 100 points and when I mentioned inner tubes... Well... And then here is someone else without zip and late model tubes installed = What do I do? Kind of a no brainer after awhile.

So if I think inner tube for points, I can out point someone else and here are the trophies handed out I hope in some fairness to all competitors. Can't please them all as they say.
