How to Install and Use Apache OpenOffice to View Log Files

You will need .csv data files (see LCD-200 Setup and Functions, steps 55 through 67 and Viewing Complete Data From Log Files immediately following step 69) to open in OpenOffice.

The spreadsheets application of OpenOffice may be used in place of Excel for viewing data log files. Apache OpenOffice may be downloaded for free. A donation to the Apache Nation can be made during the process of downloading.

1. Go to

From the appropriate menus:

Select the operating system that is on the computer.
Select the language you would like the software to use.
Select the latest version of the software you would like to download.

Click Download full installation

2. The screen will change to the download page and the download will begin automatically within 30 seconds. You do not need fill in any info in the START HERE box.

3. When the file has completed downloading, go to your downloads to find the file labeled Apache OpenOffice.

Click on the file to install from downloads.

4. The Open Office Installation Preparation box will open. The installation process is lengthy and there are a few choices that may be important so I will cover every step as concisely as I can.

Click Next.

5. Select Folder will open. The program will be stored on your C drive unless you select some other destination. I suggest the desktop so everything installed is clearly visible and easy to locate.

Click Browse. The Browse For Folder box opens.

Select Desktop.

Click OK. Browse For Folder goes away.

6. Click Unpack to send the software to your desktop.

7. The Installation Wizard opens.

Click Next.

8. Customer Information opens. The username of the computer appears by default. I left that as is. You do not need to enter any info for Organization.

Select Anyone who uses this computer to avoid the need to enter a username to open.

Click Next.

9. Setup Type opens.

Select Typical.

Click Next.

10. Ready to Install the Program opens.

Select Create a start link on desktop.

Click Install.

The installation progress is indicated by a progress bar.

11. Installation Wizard Completed opens.

Click Finish.

12. If a box on the desktop containing a message that installation was not fully completed appears, continue the installation.

Click Next.

The Installation Wizard will appear again.

Click Next.

13. Custom Setup will open.

Leave the default setting, OpenOffice Program Modules selected.

Click Next.

14. File Type opens.

Do not select anything.

Click Next.

15. Ready to Modify the Program opens.

Select Create a start link on desktop.

Click Install.

16. Installation Wizard Completed will open.

Click Finish.

17. The Welcome to OpenOffice box will open.

Click Next.

18. Enter a username. You do not need to enter a last name or Initials.

Click Finish.

19. If your security software asks you to verify that you want the software from an unknown source to install, click Yes.

Using OpenOffice Spreadsheets For Log File Data
20. You will find two Open Office icons on your desktop as well as the installer icons. I kept the installer icons because the installer also allows you to easily uninstall the program.

Click the blue circle with white birds icon to open the software.

21. Apache OpenOffice 4 opens.

Click the Spreadsheet application icon.

22. The Spreadsheet application opens.

Click File > Open to select a .csv file to open in the spreadsheet table.

23. The Open box opens.

Select Desktop (or where ever you save your log files to) > .csv file you want to open.

If you have the .csv file also saved in .displog format, the .displog will not open in OpenOffice.

Select the file that was converted to .csv which has an icon that looks like a table.

Click Open.

24. The Text Import box opens. Leave all settings at default except for Separator Options.

Click Separated by > Comma. No other boxes should be checked under Separator Options.

Click OK.

25. The log file opens in spreadsheet.

The values in the log file populate the cells of the table. Time is in the far left column with the data channels proceeding to the right.

Use the scroll bars at the bottom and righthand side of the table to scroll right and left and up and down.

26. Click and drag the edge of columns to collapse or open them.

You may also click on a single cell to mark it with a bold outline.

27. Click the number of a row at the left of the table to highlight the entire row.

28. Click and drag the vertical border of rows to collapse or open them up or down.

Click the letter of a column or number of a row to highlight the entire column or row.

29. Repeat steps 22, 23 and 24 to open a second log file.

30. To view an alternate log file immediately,

Click File > Recent Documents > and select the file you wish to open.

The alternate log file opens. You may use this method to compare multiple log files.

31. Click File > Close.

32. A box will open asking if you want to save changes.

If when you next open the file, you want the file to appear as it did when first opened, click Discard.

OR

If you would like the file open next time as it currently appears, click Save.

OR

If you want to leave the file open without saving any changes, click Cancel.

33. After all files have been closed, The Open Office applications screen will open.

Click File > Close to close Open Office.

I "highly" recommend installing and using LibreOffice instead of Apache Open Office.

It's a branch of Open Office and is more modern, more up to date, supported better and not
in as many licensing issues as Apache Open Office. All the programmers that supported Open
Office baled a few years ago and went to work on LibreOffice instead of Apache Open Office.

There's also a portable version that you can run directly from an executable file
and do not have to install if you choose or want to run directly from USB stick etc.

Libreoffice

Thanks for posting the link, piken. Is Libreoffice free?

yes, it's free.

They are all branches of the original StarOffice from Sun Mirco. Oracle took over
to make Oracle Open Office, then gave up on it and pulled their paid developers and donated
it to Apache foundation making Apache Open Office. At same time branched off to LibreOffice
Open Office. In 2015 Apache Office only received 10% of the improvements that LibreOffice did.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LibreOffice

I've used all the above for many years. LibreOffice is a very good "free" software suite.

I have not used AOO much but I can't think of much more I could ask for from the spreadsheet app....would be nice to be able to have more than one file open and simply click to switch from one to another like you would with text documents. Also, would be great if you could somehow overlay files to compare. There are a bunch of the spreadsheets controls I have not explored so IDK what it all does. The basic functions seem adequate but I plan t use spreadsheets a lot in the near future. I'll probably give Libreoffice a try.
