Early impressions
08/20/13 2:43 PM

I'm getting more comfortable with the beast so I can evaluate her better now.

Got to take her out of town a bit today. Well well well.

Observation 1: She likes gas. Shifts smoother if you are harder on the throttle. Overall happier if you flog her a little.
This works against the 'smooth touring and occasional hooliganism' model. Keeping her happy will invite more attention from the popo.

Observation 2: WOT in third is warp drive. I got used to short shifting into 3rd and hammering it on the ZRX, but I had to really lay off earlier than I expected or I felt like I was going to fall off the back.

Damn.

Also, I love having the shift indicator and clock in the display. Small things but it sucks a little to not have them.

More early impressions -

Had most of the fairings off for the first time while installing the much needed radiator guard. Easy peasy, follow Rook's How-To, go gentle, never force, patience, and she comes apart and goes all back together again in a puzzle. I accept the additional time required for fussing over the plastics, and I am grooving on the process. Probably has to do with me wanting to work on tactical aircraft in the Air Force and getting stuck with a much less interesting job.

And the stock exhaust. I like it. A bit quiet down low compared to the Muzzy I had on the Rex, but when you wind her up, it's like Godzilla is in the next room. All the sounds I recall from redlining the Rex but not completely in your face

The more I get to know the 14 the more I love it. I'm going to be very wary of letting anyone else touch it in any way, and will wrench everything I can. I did valve adjustment on the Rex so I can do this as well. Everyone else can just stay the F* away.

Some nicknames:
The 14
Beast
Bad Girlfriend
Homewrecker
The Big Piece of Chicken
The Ultimate F You
Sally

Yay! Finally have my own plate on instead of the temp tag, and it is the 'honorably discharged veteran' type, Air Force. I'm always hopeful the veteran tags will soften the heart of Officer Friendly, lord knows my base entry sticker got me out of some tickets back when I was in service.

I've had about 700 miles of saddle time now with no long trips, and I am very comfortable. Couldn't be happier.

Guys, if you are going to be passing around boobs on my thread, you have to share with me!
