good day everyone having an issue with my bike trying to figure out what it is. Bike is a 2012 zx14r i have a pc5 with a bmc air filter and full hindle exhaust. bike has been tuned by a great tech. My issue is the bike on take off loses power and boggs down. if i let off the gas and slowly increase the throttle she goes. bike has about 10k and i keep it well maintained. decided to pull the plugs and they looked fouled. I replaced the plugs and cleaned the air filter. Bike seems more responsive but still boggs at low rpm. is there a way to pull codes on this beast. bike was running great this summer. only started running weird towards the end of september. would climate change have an affect on the way she runs.thanks in advance for any help.

Disconnect/unplug the Power Commander and tell us what happens. Climate/temp should not make any difference. Has the gas been sitting in the tank long? At 10K the plugs should look clean and a bit brown, if they are fouled the map/mixture/timing is suspect. Pulling the PC out of the control loop would put it back to stock unless you flashed the ECU.

Did you do anything else to the bike lately?

i thought it might be bad gas but i refilled with new gas. Im using petro canada 94. I asked the tech that tuned it if the map could be the issue he said no. Told me to replace the plugs. Haven't done anything else to the bike. weird thing is she was running like a dream and then this started happening. wouldn't it give me a code.

or just put a zero map in it. All zeros = no fuel adjustment = stock fueling (assuming the stock fueling was not flashed to something other than stock). Lot easier than pulling those damned plugs.

Thats wise and sage advise Rook, your tuning wisdom is really helpfull. I get it now that you said the zero map but with no recent experience I would have never thought about that approach!

And I agree with Green, seems like in the last yr many new issues with a bike suddenly running bad. Probably the Russians hacking our ECU and PCs.

Just seems kinda ...weird.
Up until this last year or so,it was rare that this issue was goin on.If I remember correctly.PC grounds...yeah.That happened a few times.But the 'losing power' thing.I don't recall there was any of that.And the stumbling thing.That's another one.

is there a way to recover the exhisting map in the pc5 before going to a stock map. The guy that tuned my bike has the file for the map. He is very reputable and has a lot of knowledge when it comes to this beast. don't want to ask him for the file in case it gets lost.

Yes.
i knew you would ask that. good question and probably good idea to not question your tuner just yet.

You need to download the PC5 software to a PC computer, no Macs.

You need to hook up the computer to the PC5.

Open PC5 software and click Yes in the Windows Confirm box when you see it. This will save maps to desk top otherwise they will go to your C drive by default. i guess you could get it from your C drive if you know how to access that.

Click OPEM MAP button below the black box on the left.

Click the icon for the PC5 file that will appear in the white Open Map File box that opens.

Click OPEN in the Open Map File box.

You can view the map now by clicking the Fuel icon in the black box to the left.

THEN--Click Save Map button below the black box to the left. This should save the map to your desktop ...or your C drive if you did not click Yes in the Confirm box.

I have the first two sections of my PC5 software tutorila updated. That should get you far enough to save the map you have in your PC5 so you can reload it when necessary.

HOW TO LOAD MAPS AND AN OVERVIEW OF PC5 SOFTWARE v1.0.6.4

Follow steps in the intro to download PC5 v1.0.6.4 to your computer. The software must be installed on a non-Mac to open and use it. A laptop is most convenient but you can use a desktop.

If the PC5 is more than a year or two old, you may also want to update the PC5 firmware. I did. Check the firmware version in the PC5 by following step 21 of my tutorial. If necessary, get the firmware file onto your desktop from the DJ site or and then plug into the PC5. Click the firmware icon on the desktop with the PC5 software open and I believe it updates the PC5 by itself. if you are in a hotspot or direct connection to internet, just follow step 36 of the tutorial and that will update automatically.

You could save your current map to the desktop on your computer and then zero out the same map in your PC5 and rename and save that. BUT So that you can follow the tutorial from step 1, I'd suggest downloading any Dynojet map from their site and placing that on your desktop instead. You know, right now you have no map on your desktop so you will not be able to follow the tutorial and since this is your first go at it, it's probably best to stick to the program as much as possible. So download any DJ map for a Gen2 ZX-14. It does not matter which one because you will be turning it into a zero map anyway.

Then you are all set and everything that comes up on your computer should be the same as what came up on mine.

When you have your DJ map on the desktop, start at step 1 and go through step 8. Mess around with those a few times to get a little familiar with the software. The computer will not be connected to the PC5 yet so there is no chance you could change or erase the map in your PC5.

Don't worry, you cannot lose the map in your PC5 unless you load a new one to the PC5. That is how the PC5 is erased, you load a new map over the old. Of course you will check to see the tuners map is stored on your desktop before you load the DJ map over the tuner map that will remain in the PC5 even as it is saved on your desktop.

Follow steps 9 through 18 to save the tuner's map. Go ahead and check that the map you have saved on the desktop is identical to the one in the PC5. When you have confirmed the tuners map is saved, follow step 19 to load the DJ map to your PC5 overwriting the tuners map in the PC5--but it's ok because you will have the tuner's map saved on your desktop. If you want to be extra safe, go ahead and save the tuner's map to a thumb drive as well. If anything happens, you can always retrieve it from the thumb drive.

When you have accomplished saving the tuner's map and loading the DJ map, I will update more of the tutorial and tell you how to make the DJ map a zero map. Then you start the bike and run it on stock fueling to compare.

Come to think of it, since you have a full system, you probably would be better off to not run on stock fueling. I doubt very much it would hurt at all especially not at low rpm where you have the problem but look for a DJ map that will match your exhaust as close as possible. You may find a full system Hindle map for the Gen2 on the DJ map list. Otherwise, give them a call and ask what will match your exhaust as closely as possible. Do not worry about running a DJ map safely. They are pretty conservative which is why I don't usually suggest them for the best performance. But for this, a DJ map will be fine.

If the DJ map does the same thing as the tuner's map, you might try another DJ map. It's up to you if you want to try stock fueling. If that was what you were running the Hindle on before, it should be no problem now. I can tell you how to zero out the DJ map to get stock fueling but first, try a DJ map that matches your exhaust and see what that does.

So all you do is follow the above post and instead of waiting for me to tell you how to zero the map, go ahead and run on the DJ map. Let us know how it runs. We can try another or you can reload the tuner's map. It will always stay on your desk top or whatever folder/location you create to store your maps even after you reload it.

Quick question. Do you still have your secondary plates in place? Reason I ask is that I had the exact same issue when my bike was about a year old. It felt like my bike was being throttled back below 4,000 even though I was approaching WOT.

I removed my secondary plates and the problem vanished and hasn’t returned. I still can’t explain what happened but it’s worth looking into if you can’t find a problem with your PC as Rook mentioned.
