I had a great idea!
11/23/17 4:52 PM

I was planning to replace that big ol' heavy steel bracket that holds the mudflap steady under the fuel tank with a nice light piece made of 1/8" aluminum corner trim.. When I picked up the corner trim, it felt awful heavy compared to the OEM bracket. I tested it with a magnet and sure enough, the OEM bracket is aluminum, too. Oh well, no weight loss there. Back on it goes...with aluminum bolts this time.

Not all ideas work out.

I could make it even lighter by using a 1/16" piece of corner trim but that might be going too far. Maybe I'll make one and see if it feels strong enough.

Tried 1/2" channel and that just looked to small. Probably would work just as well. The width of the piece doesn't add much to the rigidity. I went with 3/4" channel, 1/16" stock and left some extra metal between the lightening holes. 7/8" wide on the outside. feels plenty sturdy. Seems mostly to hold the mudflap from wiggling laterally.

There is a wire bracket on the LH side but I removed that a couple years ago. There would need to be some kind of spacer put in there if that bracket were on the bike. There is a clip for the rear brake light wire connector on the right. An aluminum P clip will replace that.

I think in the pic we're looking down from under the seat ... I see your pipe hanger and pipe to the left ... OK I went back and read what you've been up to: We're looking at the aluminum bracket across the middle. And it saves us 1.75 ounces ... hell to the yeah! That's 0.11 pounds my man! Good job!

LOL standing at front of bike looking back. fuel tank removed, looking down at open mudflap fuel tank compartment between the tail and the air box. You see the bottom of the rear brake fluid reservoir at the upper left and the fuse box. Also muffler at the left margin. Black bracket is rear fuel tank mount (I painted mine) and there is a similar bracket below that (silver) that stabilizes the mudflap. The silver one is the Mudflacket© by Rook Performance©.

($45 US, only)

hey rook you can also save weight by going to smaller AMP fuse . less fuse material = less weight

also drill all bolts centers out like the axle shafts

Now those are truly ingenious ideas, 1bad. I'll take those under consideration. Maybe hollowed out plastic bolts!

You can perforate the mud flap also should be good for a few more MPH being air can flow thru it

Haha Thanks. CF is something I have in mind for the future if it can be DIYed economically. For now, aluminum is a whole lot of fun.

BTW--MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone! I'm off until Jan 02. Spending it with kids and parents in MI. Maybe I will actually get back on my switch plate project a little.
