Rich Fuel Map - Stock
05/09/12 4:34 PM

Just wondering about people's thoughts on why Kawasaki runs the 14 so rich in stock trim. I started thinking about this after reading about a couple of engine failures.

Are they compensating for the overheating issues with the bike? Obviously an engine will run cooler on the rich side. Are they helping to reduce detonation? Detonation is a main reason for rod failures is it not? Or is it a combination of both. There must be a reason.

I am looking at running a full system with a PC5, but am a little hesitant. Am I being paranoid after reading about just a couple of failures?

Thoughts?

Yes to all the above, wild1.

The OEM A/F map in the ECU is so rich, and the ignition timing so conservative, you could put an aftermarket full exhaust on and, depending on your altitude, run without a piggy. Possibly. It would be close.

For sure you can put a slip-on without a piggy.

I've had Power Commanders since way before the PC3. I had one on my 1992 Ducati 900 SuperSport which didn't even have a version number back then.

I've never known one to fail. Some have not properly grounded them, but thats not the piggy's fault.
