PC III problems?
08/20/09 1:14 PM

Anybody having PC III problems with cracks, failures or issues? My riding buddy has a Honda VTX cruiser as well as a Busa and he says that the PCIII's have a bad failure rate with the guys over there and he doesn't recommend installing one.

I have a PC III that I want to plugin this weekend. I know that the ground wire is important and that the throttle postion has to be set.

Mine's been faithful for over two years-mounted the ground onto the subframe above the reservoir(little bolt under there)after filing the paint off. There should be a small bolt(hole)(may be holding the harness)under there(or at least a place to screw one in?)

Mount it in a spot where it wont take a beating and check the ground wire and harness for problems every once in a while and it will do just fine for a long time.

To much to list!

I need to jump in on this thread. I just installed a PCIII. I used a map off Dynojet website. I was sure to get a good ground connection. But I don't know about "setting the throttle." Can someone tell me what's involved in that?

See this link for the actual PDF in the 06 install.
http://www.powercommander.com/powercommander/powercommander_iii_usb.aspx?mk=8&mdl=64&yr=2006

But what I read somewhere else is this:
"This bike uses a servo to hold the throttle
plate open during cold starts. Make sure the
bike is up to operating temperature BEFORE
resetting the throttle position on the PCIII
software."

With the engine started and warmed up and idling, press the left button to set the idle. Then turn off the bike AT THE CUTOFF button ON THE handlebar NOT the ignition switch.

With the bike still on and the engine off, roll the throttle to the middle, then press the middle button, then roll the throttle to the furthermost point you can and press the right button. I guess I'll have to mark the throttle grip for the exact middle somehow beforehand.

Ah, here's the correct link:
http://www.powercommander.com/powercommander_iii_usb/downloads_general/pciiiusb_software/manuals/PCIIIUSB_User_Guide.pdf

This goes to a pdf so you have to have Adobe Reader.

Hay thanks Jesse. This is useful information. I bought my PCIII second hand and didn't get a lot of info with it. I got a CD that seemed to be totally corrupted. I found one map which I could use. It runs better but is a little rough at 3000 RPM. (2950-3050) It's very smooth and powerful otherwise. This seems to be a problem which is correctable with adjustment. But I haven't got the proper instructions to make adjustments.

I've heard no negative comments about PCIII reliance or effectiveness. Improper grounding is the only consistent problem I've read about.

I'm suprised that there isn't more competition out there with devises for modification tuning adjustments. You have to have something like this unless you run bone stock! I don't know of any but I suppose the people who run their bikes completely stock don't get into the forums. Just us....I'm gonna fix it even if it isn't broken ...kind of guys.

Sharkey, that's funny that you could only fine 1 map at Dynojet. I have the twin carbon fiber Yoshimura TRC's and I could only find one map for my 14 there at Dynojet as well: TRC's with flies out and stock air filter. It just so happens that this my setup but what happens if I go with a K and N air filter? Seems to beg the question is this why zx14 owners are going to dyno shops?

[M224-022 Yoshimura TRC full exhaust, Stock air filter, Secondary butterflies removed] is actual map listed.

I think they say something like...stock or modified air filter. Essentially I've heard that going to the K&N air filter doesn't change the map you use. Reading the descriptions of equipment for the different maps I don't see any mention of what filter is being used. Seems like it should.
Because of the posibility for numerous combinations of different performance equipment, there would be potentially a large number of maps if all the combos were tested. Until that collection of maps becomes available you're going to have to go to a dyno tune for optimum performance. I think most people make compromises and assumptions using maps with equipment "Similar" to what they have.

It seems to me that If I go to a Dyno shop and get a custom map I would own that map. If I post what I'm running and anyone has the same or similar equipment I would be happy to e-mail the map to them. Hay! If a lot of others felt the same way we could build quite a library for our ZX14 group.

I tried to set up a section like that some time ago, but had no takers. I think it's a great idea. We would need to discourage people from posting maps that came from Brock's or Muzzy's or Ivan (where you had to buy something to get the map). But if someone had his bike dyno'ed and was willing to share the configuration and the map, we COULD build a great library/resource. -bg

When I get mine dynoed (woln't be real soon) I'll post it. If it helps someone that would be great. If not...nothing wasted.

If you listen to Hub you'll have a map for every day of the week. But essentially is says to me that you can never get it perfect, just close. I'm pretty sure I couldn't tell if my bike is running optimally so I would settle for close. As long as there were no outstanding glitches I'd be content. I've never had a bike that I didn't have to adjust periodically. Why should this one be different? If trying variations on maps were as easy as adjusting a carb it would be no problem. There isn't even a resource to buy maps if you find one to fill your bill. But through mutual input we could create a valuable rescource.
Let's see the wind is from the north today I'm gonna load map #135.

I have had a power commander on my 2003 1800 vtx ever since I bought it new. Many miles- No problems. No problems on my zx14 either. Follow the instructions regarding where to ground it. Install it under the seat for easy access. enjoy it without worry.

I woke up this morning and I got myself a beer. The future is uncertain and the end is always near.
