slider rails
05/13/09 7:25 PM

There's a lot of discussion about body sliders. The warning about damage to the mounting points, when the bike falls over standing still, is discouraging. Does anyone know about the rail systems. I can't seem to find them in a "search" cause I don't really know what they're called. Anyone?

Hey Sharkey, I think you might be talking about Power's Race Railz

http://www.powersstuntworx.com/railz.html

I am running these on my bike and love them, they also mount at 2 seperate points and the bolt goes deeper in the mounts where the basic slider would go, which should prevent any breakage of frame..

Those are the product! I'm glad to get the info from someone who actually has them. Many of the accounts you read, about problems with sliders etc. are hearsay. Your bike looks sharp with the rails on. I was thinking I would have to tell everyone that they were my handicap bars. (I'm 63) But they actually look high tech sharp!
Have you considered the rear axle sliders to protect the Muzzys? (I have Muzzys too, love the deep tone.)
I've had a lot of bikes over the years and sooner or later they all go down. I'm getting custom paint and would hate to even lay it down gently while parking, which seems to happen about every 10 years.

How's it going Sharkey??

I actually have rear-axle sliders on her, they are the little brushed aluminum buttons on the swingarm, they match the front-axle sliders in design just smaller. I do not think that they would totally protect the muzzy without putting a new rear-set on her with the solid footpegs, with the solid pegs and the sliders she would be protected in the event of a fall or slide. I do not think i will change rearsets though, I like the fold-up foot-peg w/ the bank-sensor, it gives you that extra little bit of warning, without lifting the rear wheel like solid pegs can do. They will protect well enough to hopefully protect the brake/shifter, and the keep the foot-peg from breaking off, and just give the muzzy a little scrape. Good Lord willing, hopefully she is protected well enough, that if i do low side her i should be able to ride away.

Yeah! The Muzzys has a great sound, I love mine..

I've had a lot of bikes over the years and sooner or later they all go down. I'm getting custom paint and would hate to even lay it down gently while parking, which seems to happen about every 10 years.

And I agree it doesn't matter who you are, sooner or later it happens to everyone who rides.
Best of luck on keeping the rubber down and the shiny side up!!But I do believe that the race railz and front/rear axle sliders will protect your fairings and paint in the event of a fall or non-violent low-side.

Take care Sharkey and enjoy the ZXsummer...Hopefully that 10 year gremlin will skip ya next time...

Yo minerman,
Just got back in town. The damn painter/artist still has my bike. Well, like he says, "Its Art, not production work!"
I saw, on the Racer Rails website, some rear axle sliders which mounted within the axle. These were in addition to the swing arm spools. They looked about 4" long. Is that what you have? (They're like $80) I'm waiting for a reply from the Mfg. as to whether the Rails fit the 2008. They only list 2007 on the site. The frame was completely redesigned in 2008 with new hollow alloys and other changes, making it lighter and stronger. I cannot find info as to whether ths dimensions changed. I just noted that yours is a 2008 so apparently they do have units for "08 models.
How far do your front axle sliders extend?
Well I'm back to riding my 6R for a few days longer. I gave up on fairings for it. I was saving it for the track. I'm an ex big wave rider and wipeouts are just part of the game.

What's happening Sharkey?? I hate to hear you are still waiting on the painter, better that he takes his time, than to rush and half-ass it, but that doesn't make the waiting any easier though, does it... At least you still have the ZX6 to play on, that has to make it alot easier.

The rail for the '06-'07 is the same one for the '08-'09, the frame dimensions are the same..

I just have swingarm spool sliders on the rear, I ordered them but can't remember where i got them from, i will try to find the info if you like them and are interested. But they will do very little in the way of protecting the bike, they were mainly for looks and for using my rear paddock stand.
Race railz did not have those axle sliders when i ordered mine. They do look like they would do a good job though, I am considering ordering a set next payday.

After getting the railz and the sliders on, it was getting close to winter, and I hadn't given it any more thought, until you started this thread. I had 1st planned on getting fixed rear-sets, and with the railz they would have done a fine job of protecting her, but since i have decided to stay away from the rear sets, better spools on the rear are definitely needed.

The front spools extend 1-5/8 in. from the axle. the rear are 1-1/2 in. from the swingarm.

Surfing is something i have always wanted to do, and to ride the big waves really had to kick-ass. But yeah wiping out happens, and it doesn't matter who you are, or how good you are, sooner or later everyone goes down. Hell, Ben Bostrom low-sided while leading the race at infineon this week-end, and the mighty Mladdin laid his down while leading at Road Atlanta last week-end. These two guys are some of the best in the world, and it happens to them.
I do have to say, that pushing it to the limit, and trying to find that edge can put you in a position to use the sliders alot kwiker, than just cruising around. But even just cruising, accidents happen. That's why I promote ATGATT. When you fall off that edge, it is alot better to get-up and ride away, than to have your bike towed, and be carried away....

So wear the gear, protect the bike, and push a little HARDER!!!

Rear Swingarm Spool

This is the only pix i could find on the pc, i will take some different angles and post them tomorrow, Sharkey...

Hi minerman,
Thanks for the information. I'll be ordering mine today. They indicate a long lead time, like 4 weeks.
Too bad you have to pack it in for winter. Out here we just bundle up a little more. Only a very few frozen road days here in the foothills where I live now. My Bridgestone BT021s handle the rain fine.
I was at Infineon for the races. Hot as hell there. Looked like Bostrom just got a little careless. The track was really hot and the melted rubber can get slippery.
The push a little harder stuff I reserve for Track, surf and ski racing only. I'm pretty mellow on the public roads.
(Except for my secret spot where I can let loose to 150+ occassionally early in the morning.) I woln't be riding the ZX14 at the track. Not that I'm a poser but the 6R is plenty fast in the right hands. You might notice that the qualifing times of the Suzuli liter bikes and the Kawa 6R wer and don't let any Harleys pass youe less than a second apart at Infineon.
Well, have a good summer and don't let any Harleys pass you.
Sharkey

I think you will like them,Sharkey. I have been pleased with mine, and Power's Stunt Workz was good to deal with.

Did you order a set of the rear axle sliders also??

And I agree with you, I believe Ben did get just a litttle careless, and I really hate it for him, isn't that his home town and track? Just like with Mladdin, I think they said that was the 1st time he had wrecked in a race since 2004, but what i meant that no matter how good you are, accidents still happen...

I would say that was a killer race, LIVE, sure would have liked to been there, and i would Luv for the good Lord to grace us here on the East coast with some of your beautiful SoCal weather...It's raining here Now

Have you ever pulled a track day @ infineon?? As tight as that track is, I would think a 600 would be a blast!!

And you know that the only time a H-D is going to pass a ZX14, Is when it is going the other way...

Hi minerman,

I did order the rear axle slider too. I was checking out your radiator guard. Went to the web site. They also had some good looking axle sliders for the front. Tell me though, does your bike run any hotter with the radiator guard on? I have noticed that on longer rides my right shin gets a little hot from the engine. I wouldn't want it to get any hotter. I noticed that when I put a radiator guard on my 6R it ran a little hotter, especially on hot days. But it didn't effect my comfort and it didn't exceed the acceptable heat range for the bike so I've left it on.

You know, being at the race live is totally awesome. I know that the longer I'm at speed the more it seems to slow down. But it must take hundreds of hours at speed to move the way those guys do. Bostrom was the local favorite. I've never done a track day at Infineon. A couple of years ago I had a pass to do a couple laps but they shut the track down because of a drainage problem. Water was running across turn 4 the day after a big storm. They cancelled the race that day too. I was on my BMW R1250 that day. (Same bike the Highway Patrol uses.) It tended to drag footpegs a lot when riding aggressively, but still would have been fun. They were selling laps for $10. But my 14 was at the painters this yearand I couldn't ride it down there.

Sorry you're grounded from rain. At least you got some riding in on the weekend. I'm in Northern California, by the way. In the foothills about an hour from Lake Tahoe. I still ski a lot but had to retire from the Ski Patrol. Lost some mobility in my left arm from a cancer operation. Makes surfing kinda tough too. But no problem riding so I ride a lot.

Adios,
Sharkey

Sharkey,
I can't honestly tell you if the rad gaurd caused the temp to increase or not, it was fall of theyear when i installed the rad gaurd and the ambient temp had already fallen. now that the temp is increasing we actually got up to 85deg the other day and she did not get but 1/2 way up the gauge, even setting idling in traffic 1 bar above 1/2 is as hot as she will get now, but this is due to the Engine Ice, the Amsoil, and the bike getting good and broke-in..
But I don't think that the gaurd would cause a rise in temps, it is made well, and should be free-flowing.

So you live in NoCal, well you know what I mean about too much rain, it sux...I have always wanted to visit NoCal and good lord willing, maybe some day i will. I want to visit NoCal, but I would like to live in SoCal. I seen somewhere that from like April to late October, they get NO RAIN!!!(that has to be nice)

Take care Sharkey and let us know what you think about those axle sliders, If you like and are happy with them, then I will order some...

Take care
