Frame mount bolts stuck
04/09/15 1:39 PM

Anyone know how to safely remove the frame bolts to allow me to fit frame sliders (crash bungs). I tried a 7mm hex key with a lot of force but they will not move. Cheers

If I remember correctly from doing mine they have thread locker on them. Try taking the bike for a ride and getting the engine nice and hot. It should soften the thread locker enough to loosen the bolts. I'm pretty sure that's what I had to do.

Yes, they have the factory soft red putty stuff on them. If you mean the engine mount bolts. That's where the frame sliders normally attach. A hot engine should help a lot. I had no problem with mine though. Careful so you don't strip the hex. Get new bolts if you stretch the hex.

Cheers Rook. I'll try some heat at the weekend - should do the trick.

Thanks

Ronnie

Thanks guys for your advice. I took the bike up to 90 degrees on idle and the bolts came out easily.

Mission accomplished

Thanks again

Ronnie

I hope that works for my frame bolts--the ones that attach the rear portion of the frame that runs below the seat.

Rook:

How come you're removing your subframe?

It's the tail section below the seat--the main part of the back frame. I just wanted to switch to gold Ti bolts. I was planning to do this last summer but couldn't get the OEM bolts to break free. So I have given up on it for now. That'd prolly be $40 worth of bolts anyway. I know aluminum wouldn't be the smartest choice for these but it has crossed my mind. If they are kept tight but are not over torqued, the tension should make even aluminum strong enough...but it's iffy.

I already removed the tail subframe--the square rails that you see below the lower curved edge of the tail fairings. This was to make space for Ohlins controls and nitrous bottles. It also saved 1 lb, 10.1 oz. I'm sure the nitrous bottles and controls weigh more but it's still nice to loose that weight. I think it looks really cool too...but the skinny thoracic stem look will be interrupted on mine by the nitrous bottles. Obviously I won't be carrying any cargo or passengers on the tail any more.
