Finished major MODS.
03/15/15 7:08 PM

This Wednesday, a group I ride with are heading to West Texas. Trip should be about 2500 miles over 4 days. I just finished a major modification to my 14R and some upgrades as well.

I changed my NON ABS bike into an ABS bike. I was called a "pussy" on this forum for doing so but as an ex CRMA,WERA road racer all I can say is so what. I'm 45 and I can appreciate technology. I was able to buy a wireing harness, ECU, ABS pump, complete front and rear calipers and all piping from a donor bike. The hardest part of the install was pulling the wireing harness through the frame. I took my time disassembling and reassembling and everything went well. While I was at it, I bought Delkelvik dual slip-ons. I sent the ECU to Guhl Motors and let them tune it. I also added heated grips, a taller wind screen and wired in some plugs for heated gear and 12v power to the front. Oh, and I added riser bars and murphs lowering pegs.

The sun finally showed its face today and I took the bike out for testing before the big trip. Everything works well. The Guhl flash is amazing. The first three gears now are unreal with the safety mode disabled.

I should be good to go.

Cheers.

Nice, I wonder if a Gen1 can be converted to ABS?

Jimmymac is the guy that called everyone with ABS a "pussy" Rook, Im not sure about that GEN1 conversion. If the bike in Europe has it, then I would think it would be possible.

I noticed a few posts that way with comments about ABS owners being a pussy. I believe it was jimmymac but could be wrong. I think it was more jealousy with the comment because the person owned a 2012 so was not able to buy the option.

Either way NO your not a pussy and I think it was a pretty courageous venture to get into the ABS install on your bike. I was unaware there was an option for the ABS aftermarket. My bike is ABS and was not going to buy anything but. I guess every Hyabusa owner is a pussy now to from 2013 on.

I also beg to differ. I think the ABS may have assisted you on the lockup in your near accident. In the end I am glad you came out fine and without injury. Probably had to change your shorts after but hey anything better than an accident.

I figured the 2012's could be configured with ABS.They have it standard in Europe.I'd never have another non-abs bike again.I love mine.It really does work nicely. As for gravel,snow,Ice...sand...it won't save ya I don't think. But if the tires can get any grip on the road surface,it'll definitely work.I 'locked' mine up a few times just testing really...I love the way it stops the fishtailing aspect of emergency stopping. In the rain...it did the same thing.Stopped firmly and STRAIGHT.

I would like to confess, I'm a pussy! ABS and KTRC was a big reason I got a Gen 2 over Gen 1.

Oh I would love to have ABS ... was just too cheap to pay for it

Also not sure the white '13 was available with ABS? Either way, too far above my budget.

Cool swap. I'm a drag racer so I didn't want the extra weight of the unit. Good show.

Dehaile - how much amperage will all your gear draw on full blast? I have Oxford heated grips (4.0 amps) and a 12V plug I use to charge my cell phone (1.0 amps) and I wonder how much we can push the stock charging system?

Sweet bike and kudos to doing a sucessful ABS upfit.....impressive!!

The charging system is rated at 35amps so I know I am okay with everything turned on.

My bike is ABS and I was not going to buy one that was not. I went Don Guhl for my ECU too. It cost some bucks, but at least you know where you stand with a Guhl flash..
