Is it a 50-state bike?
03/03/18 10:56 AM

Hi there. Just registered as I’m looking at buying a used ZX-14R. I live in CA which means that buying a used bike and bringing it in to CA comes with its own challenges. Namely emissions. I need to be sure the bike I buy is CA emissions compliant so I can register it here.

Is the ZX-14 a 50-state bike? (I’m looking at a 2016).
Where is the emissions sticker on the bike?

Appreciate the info. Potentially doing a fly-n-ride purchase has got me nervous!

Thanks.

Welcome. https://www.cheapcycleparts.com/oemparts/a/kaw/56e71fb087a8660e60bbd52a/fuel-injection

Say you buy a 49 state bike with a US ECU. Say you buy a cali ECU for a grand+; you're good to go. That's the only difference. Say you add up the plane fare, the missed work day(s) money, the cali box buy, the hotel room(s) riding it back. Say you add all that money and you're at a break even point a hundred here or there buying new. I'd be riding home a local dealer leftover without the emissions hassle needing a cali ECU. Look for any 2017 leftover. Sold out? Then hit the trader/craigs everyday till one pops up.

I definitely could be wrong, but I was under the impression that

a. To bring a used bike into CA it has to have over 7,500 miles on it.
b. CA emission package wouldn't matter at that point on a used bike over
7,500 miles.

The big thing is it has to have over 7,500 miles I believe.

Good luck, more research needed.

Doesn't the CA model also have the emission evap system on it too?

Not sure, but every other bike I've had has had it if CA model.

Piken, I did think of that but I looked at it as tighter emissions somewhere in the books I don't know about(?) Then again, everyone keeps moving here with 48 emission cars so I could be 100% turned around on this. I forgot the mileage limit so if that's the miles needed for entry, you're good to go. My mistake turned loophole if it means a heads up for buyer's remorse.

Depends on the deal. I did a 3 day no sleep turn around to pick my bike up.

Got an outstanding deal and only additional cost was diesel for my truck.

Fly and ride can be a little troublesome, you would need to get temp
plates/travel permit for each state and insurance. Which if you don't own
the bike yet you would have to do after purchasing. Easier to haul or have shipped.

I'll take a guess on this, piken, but if the black box gets the bike in the state so does the tank. Computer bike speaking: A loop is a loop is a loophole.

I thought I read somewhere that they are going to start making only one emission
compliant model on the new models for sale in all states.

Could be wrong.

I believe a call to your insurance co could tell you if you are covered. Meaning, call in the vin and you'd have a policy retro and ready to go.

2018 parts manual has not come out yet so answer is still pending. 2017 though, shows 3 ECU's: Can-US/US/CA.

Thanks for quick replies.

The 7,500 mi rule is a consideration, that’s true. Fortunately / Unfortunately, the bike I’m looking at has less miles than that. If the bike has less than 7,500 miles, you can bring it into CA IF it has the proper emissions sticker.

I’m familiar with the CA rules. But, I don’t know how Kawasaki brings bikes in to the US....are they 50 state compliant or not? If they’re not, do you know where the emissions sticker is on the bike? Btw, sometimes CA bikes get sold elsewhere which is why I don’t want to assume that the bike I’m considering in AZ is not CA compliant.

Also, I hear you re: breakeven analysis, but in this case I have several things going for me. One, I travel to Phoenix quite often and could get home in a day if I wanted to - so no hotel expense, no airfare expense. Plus, I’d get to ride the beauty home and take the scenic route! :)

Thanks!

I bought a new 2016 SE leftover here in GA that turned out to be a California bike. It has a sticker on the gas tank warning not to overfill the tank, and an emissions system diagram printed on the bottom of the seat.
Good luck with the purchase!

Thanks Paulbe.

Do you have a sticker that looks something along the lines of this...where is it?

As far as i know there are still bikes labeled as 48 state and california only. I bought my bike 2012 zx14 bike for a guy in georgia. It was a 48 state model. As far as regerstration goes in California an out of state car/ bike has yo at least have 7500 miles on it to be considered used and registered in California. My bike only had a little over 1k miles on it when I had it shipped to me. If it has plates and tags from a diffrent state you can get away with riding it for a while until you get the necessary miles. Just don't get stopped or they'll make u get a ticket. They want you to register anything out of state within 30 days. They will charge you a fee if you don't. The emmisions sticker is on the left side of the bike behind the mid fin panel. Here's what mine looked like. On 48 model bike.
My bike also had a brocks full system which wasnt an issue. but could be with new emmisions laws?

There is a sticker located behind the left mid fin panel. At the bottom of the sticker you will see it in the description. On California models it will say conforms to us epa and California.
48 state models only say conforms to us APA regulations. Also California models will have a large evap cannistor located inside the right lower mid panel behind the signal light. It can easily be removed and hoses blocked off with no issues

I bought a 2016 Se last October in NC and it turned out to be a Ca bike. It has a Ca ecu and the evap canister behind the right side fairing. Ecu number is 21175-1124. The 49 state model is 21175-1123.

I just took delivery of a new 2016 ZX14R ABS SE. I bought a California model (JGFL) from a dealer in NC. I need to have the VIN verified to complete registration in CA and am wondering if I need to show the emissions sticker. What is involved in removing the left side panel which hides the label?

Thanks.

Its not that difficult.you just have to remove 2 bolts. 1 at the tank and the the lower side fin bolt. There is a pin push in tab on the side panel. Just slowly wiggle and pull panel to the side.if you want to comletly remove side panel there is also a bolt in the middle of the side fin with a rubber housing by the engine mount.

Thanks. I took a red eye flight from SFO to Charlotte, NC on 3/28, rented a new Mustang GT and drove to Rockingham to sign documents at Sportcycles. I was home by 7:30pm that day. I had the bike shipped to SF for $700 and took delivery on 4/12. At $10,998 I couldn’t pass up the deal on a new 2016 SE ABS.
