Who likes the stock Metzlers on the 14?
07/01/12 10:58 PM

So I have about 1300 miles on the 14 now and so far the tires are wearing pretty good but I have to say the stock Metzlers just don't inspire confidence for me. They seem to slip around a bit when they cold and if you hit any irregularities in the road they slip all over. I've noticed even just a little throttle in a corner and they rear every once in awhile will slip a touch, just enough you give that "ass pucker" feeling. I just can't get comfortable really putting them into a corner hard. The don't seem all that great in the rain either. Been caught a few times already and I'm paranoid that front is gonna let go at any moment in the wet.

Anyone else feel that way with the stock tires? I really enjoy riding the Pilot Power 2CT's and have put them on everything, even my CBR1100XX and it made all the difference in the world, you could drag the fairings on that thing without feeling the slightest blip from the tires. I may rip these things off and go with a set of those. I have to say the Pilot Road 3's also peaked my interest as well and from other riders here seem to get rave reviews. Since the 14 does see a lot of interstate riding (road are flat and straight here) but also some spirited riding it's tough to find a tire that does both well.

Thoughts and opinions?

No issues from mine, I'm at over 7,000 miles and have ridden at speed in some pretty heavy rain. Lots of interstate riding here also and seeing a little flattening after the 150+ miles of riding Saturday with temperatures around 108 degrees. Not sure what I will put on next.

Replaced mine at 4100 miles with another set of the exact same tire. I really like them.

Phantom -

What tire pressures are you running? Try going down a few lbs.

I'm running the recommended pressure, 41 rear 38 front. I can go down a bit, what's everyone running? These tires just give me the pucker factor way to much. I don't remember my 2CT's every feeling like that...

Yessir. I was actually going to start a new post about my tire life but decided to just join into this one. I will post a pic of my tire and odometer reading. No tread showing and still have pretty good 'meat' left of them.

Wow, I'm at 2000 miles and will be needing tires soon... Damn, 7000 miles on a pair is incredible! Personally I will not replace with Metzlers again, the 2ct's have always worked well for me.... Might even get a shinko hookup, this thing just roasts the Metzlers...

Great mileage. That's usually what I get out of a set, I'm not hard on tires unless I'm tracking it, then I smoke them in a weekend. Maybe I'll lower the pressure a touch and see how that goes, what pressure is everyone running in there Metz?

I gotta say I kind of like the stock tires too. I've only got about 1700 miles on them so far but have had only a few minor slides while cornering. Depending on final mileage, I will probably put the same back on (as long as price is reasonable). I like 2CT's as well - have them on my Duc Streetfighter. They stick like crazy - I'm just not sure how long they would last on a bike as heavy as the 14R. Those that have them, let us know what kind of mileage you get.

Riding hard and sloppy - the Johnny Gan way!

Had 2ct's on my 2007 ZX14 and they lasted pretty well.... But then again I'm hard on everything I drive, especially if it has a warranty!

I got 1800+ out of my stock M5 rear.I never had any slipping while cornering like some guys. This chip seal here tears tires up quick.Went with Angel ST's for the second set.Rear was done at 2600.Front is still doing well...at 5500+ miles.New Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart rear....so far...a very good sticky tire....and the center is doing VERY well.(not the roadsmart 2).No slippage at all....I feel very confidant with this rear on here.Lots of people reported slipping with this Dunlop...Mine hasn't slipped once.Full lean....100+ mphs.150 in some cases. No nuthin...just nice firm grip.

They get hot really quick...and handle extremely nice.

I like the stock Metzlers, although I've had better. I'll be needing my first rear replacement soon. I can't see wasting a good front tire so I'll replace the rear with another M5. BUT, I'm going with the /55 for (hopefully) even better turn in.

Next time, both front & rear: Pilot Road 2 rear, Pilot Power 2CT front.
