Newbie from CO -'06 ZX14
08/23/16 9:20 PM

Hey guys!

New guy from Colorado. Just purchased my first 'big bike', a 2006 ZX14. I am no newbie to bikes and this will be eighth or ninth one. They have all been rockets with only two being 600cc and the rest 1000's. Recently I sold my 2010 Yamaha R1 and then the Zx14 literally came knocking on my door. I didn't have any plans on buying another bike anytime soon but I might as well have stole it for what I paid. Long story short an old co worker contacted me needing cash today so I picked it up for $2,100. It is a 2006 with 9058 miles. The plastics have seen better days but I am very particular about my bikes so I notice everything. It has a full Orient Express exhaust, a power commander and fairly new Michellin Pilot Powers. It is getting towards the end of season here in CO as I'm a fair weather rider so it should be a fun winter project. I have attached some pictures to show you guys what I'm working with. It looks like it is missing a few plastics and I know not all the hardware is there. Also there is what looks to be a fuel filter that is capped off dangling on the clutch side of the engine? What are my options for passenger pegs with this exhaust? Anyways she isn't perfect but for price I don't think I did too bad.

What's it like to ride a ZX14? It's like riding a 1000cc bike... but with 400 more cc's.

WOW - you did steal it. The engine is worth more than that ... Lost of used parts around so should be able to pick up decent used faring over time.

Congrats on your Beast.

Welcome, SP... Lived in Steamboat for awhile. The catch container is for rain water, oil too overfilled or one revs the crap out of it, this is a recovery bottle for both liquids. Being a fair rider, you won't see rain water in the container. Needless to say you scored! Lets go over the bike.

Photo from top down, call the first one..
1. Missing front fender. Missing mirrors.
2. The recovery container, the weather/washing gas cap drain hose next to the container. Missing lower fairing.
3. Aftermarket oil filter. Lower radiator hose clamp is not OEM. Bike dropped on this side.
4. Top fork cap covers might be aftermarket. Clutch lever broken. Missing bar weights-grip floating out.
5. Missing the farthest to the rear-lower wing set. Front fender hose band is sitting on the caliper hose.
6. Big bucks just to drop on one side. Peppered every plastic part just about as it rocked and settled.
7. This was more a moving crash. Brake lever is ground some. Maybe crashed on the stock pipe.
8. Rear chain is too dry... rusty [inner] plates.

Thanks guys! I've only got a few miles on it till I get plates on Friday but I'm happy with it. Is the catch container in the second picture? The little canister with a cap on it? It's full so I take it I need to drain it? I knew the front fender was missing and I do have the mirrors. Thanks for the great info so far!

Those are aftermarket fairings unless it's a custom paint job. You can get decent fairings on Ebay used if you're careful but IDK if they will fit with aftermarkets...probably would. I'd try to stick with OEM fairings if you plan to go over 100. Heard too many stories about aftermarket fairings flying off.

If that's oil on the driveway, it's from the head cover gasket.

A little sprucing up and good as new. Under 10,000 miles!! Great buy.

No oil, just freshly washed! If it leaked that bad, I may not have bought it haha! The forks are all nice and dry and I couldn't see any signs of any coolant/oil leaks. He just has the oil changed with Mobil 1 but I will get that changed again along with the coolant.

I would love to find an OE set of black fairings to match my truck. I'm assuming you are right on the current fenders are aftermarket because the fitament jist quite isn't there.

It's time to change the air cleaner. Pull it out and note how oiled the ram chamber is? If that oil is full in the canister, find a large drain pan. Hold the clear container, twist the black cap at the bottom. The trick is to pull the black cap with the spring clip still in place. Too hard and struggling, remove clip then twist off.

Wow, I thought I got a good deal when I bought mine!!! There are some aftermarket fairings from China that are pretty good. Some have the mounts glued on and those suck. My friend just got a full set for he ZX6 and it was beautiful. Molded mounts, they even matched the pearl in the white. I can try to find out what company he bought from if you are interested.
Enjoy the bike. Make sure to have an expert set up the suspension. They handle really good when correct, like holy crap when off.

I'll get an air filter ordered and get that drained, thank you!

What are my options for passenger pegs?

Depends on how "not right." Unfortunately, a gap between the top of the forman grills and the fuel tank fairing is normal with OEM fairings. I also have a slight funkiness with my ram air covert on the RH side.

What are my options for passenger pegs?

Only thing you could do is slash cut that pipe below the pilots footpeg and put OEM passenger pegs on. Or get a new exhaust.

One thing that stood out is the fitament around the taillight. Everything was tight but the fairing lines do not follow the tail light too well. I will try to snap some pictures of it.

I see what you are saying now by replacing it with a slash cut pipe which I think sound and look horrible personally. I had one on my '04 ZX10R and it sounded awful! The previous owner mentioned that there is a company that sells pegs for the high mount exhaust? They are kind of a 'necessity' as my girlfriend loves to ride. That is my first 'project.'

This is what I was looking for:

EDIT: So I just called Orient Express and they do offer the exhaust side peg for $120 (ouch!). If I have to go that route I will as I won't have to buy a different exhaust. If anyone else has some ideas on what other options are out there, that would be great. If this is the only way, it looks like I will be using OEM on one side and Orient Express on the other.

LOL I hope your GF's right leg is a lot shorter than than her left! Nah, I think that would be fine as long as you don't get complaints. The highmount pegs might be a bit on the cramped side for her so maybe better to be cramped on one side than both?

Well she is pretty short anyways LOL! She will be happy either way as long as she gets to go. We normally don't take too long of trips anyways other than the weekend cruises or too dinner. I have been looking all day and it looks like the OEM might fit but with out having proper dimensions, it is hard to say. It looks like it has enough clearance.

Would anyone be willing to measure their's and give me some dimensions? A motorcycle salvage yard here in CO has a few pairs (left and right) and I am wondering if I can make them work. I am pretty mechanically inclined but don't want to hack it together. I have even seen guys reverse the sides to push them forward.

I bought a used pair on ebay for $40 so that gives you a data point on cost. I cut off the passenger foot pegs to make a can hanger only with my single Sargent seat

The can bushing is 4.4 in below the line of the two mount holes and 5.1 in back from the rear hole

So I looked over the bike again and I am very happy with it. It really is in pretty good shape for being 10 years old including the missing parts and damage. I have never owned a bike this old but it I look forward to bringing her back to life. I am going to change the plastics over to fleabay ones because of price and availability. From this picture I cannot tell if it includes the belly pan/lower plastics that I am missing. Does this look complete? I also am planning on buying a whole bolt kit and starting a build thread for it.

Update on the exhaust. My bracket is already made to accept a foot peg and doesn't require a new assembly. I called Orient Express again and just the clevis is $60... it is still better than $120 but man is that steep for what it is. He did send me some pictures of it and it looks fairly simple to rig something else up. I haven't quite decided if I should just bite the bullet or make something else.

Welcome and congrats on the deal! I sold my 2006 (that had 45K+ trouble-free miles on the clock) for $5250 right when I got my current bike. Should be a fun winter project for you, I actually visit Durango just about every summer, great riding in your state!

The lower fairing parts that come together in front of the radiator are in the pic as well as the piece under the rear shock.

bikebandit.com is a good reference and parts diagram for anything you may need.\

Looks like a fun project.

Can't see your whole pic but belly pan is there on left, farthest piece back. The RH lower is on the left in front of the belly pan.. I'm sure the LH lower is on the right in the pic. i think i see the tank cover tucked right behind the front fairing below the front fender.

I did reference bike bandit last night and it looks like a complete set minus the air duct covers which it needs. I'll have to be look at different set or buy those separate.

Anyways, thanks all the help and advice guys! I'm going to start its own build thread to track her progress.

You may want to email the bodywork company and ask them if they mold the mounts into the bodywork or glue them on.
If you do have one pop off you can get some ABS cement at the hardware store and re attach it.
Be prepared to dremel some of the mounting holes a bit bigger.
