PC ground choices
11/16/14 2:50 PM

I have had my PC5 grounded at the left side subframe member for the past 5 years with no problems. There is an open bolt hole in that part and I just filed away the paint and tightened a screw in it through the ground wire eye.

Now I'm removing the subframe member permanently so I need a new PC ground. You can see my PC5 ground wire eye (wraped in blue tape) and where the wire is coming from in the pic below. The PC is installed under the seat and the ground wire is routed from there, under the fuel tank, through the frame and comes out behind the engine.

I could go with the lower coolant reservoir bolt (white arrow) but I would have to do the PC coolant reservoir ground mod to make it a reliable ground. Also, the wire would be stretched across the engine compartment with just barely enough length to reach the bolt.

My second choice is the eye that protrudes from the cylinder head gasket (yellow arrow) because it will not require the wire to be stretched. I'm not sure a metal gasket is the best ground though.

First choice is the rear bolt hole where the left side subframe member was bolted (black arrow). That would be the neatest ground but it has factory loktite. Does that look like a good place to ground if I sand off the paint around the bolt hole so the ground eye makes contact? I'm pretty sure this is what I will try but just thought I'd ask opinions.

Looks good to me.What are ya gonna do with that subframe?I mean....it IS part of the frame....which holds the motor as well......?Is it only there to allow the harness to attach along there?I'd be cautious about removing certain parts that work together.....if indeed these do.If it were ONLY a harness attachment rail...I'd think they would come up with something a little less restrictive for getting to the top of the motor.

I also think the 'eyelet' on that gasket is a poor place for a serious ground.

I'm sure it adds rigidity to the frame but I'm not sure how necessary that is. It did support a metal clutch line at one time and that would be reason enough to make it stronger than a usual wire bracket. I think they mostly decide to make it a piece of subframe because a flat piece of steel would weigh about as much anyway. I'll check carefully to see how it fits and recheck that after a couple thousand miles. If it starts to feel like the bolts are binding even a little....I guess it goes back on. Nah, if that was a vital part of the frame, there'd be one on the other side too. That's a half pound of useless junk, Green. ...but now that you mention it, I will need to figure out something to support the wire harness, won't I.

Yeah...I think you're right...probably just a 'stout' attachment point for the other stuff...

wellllll....it could be important. ..sorta. IDK. I'll need to ask some drag racer types and see what they say. If some of them do wheelies without that thing, I can sure get along without it.

I may ground the PC to the battery negative ground screw outside of the battery box. Alreday got two things there but I guess another won't hurt.

I was just doing bolt tightening myself. This subframe confuses me. I guess it's only necessary on the LHS of the motor!?

Is that subframe the ONLY attachment point for that engine mount?Other than where the mount itself attaches to the motor?Looks like it to me....I wouldn't ditch that piece if it were me.

What's the other side have there?Just the mount attaching to the engine and under that airbox frame part?I can't tell by looking at mine.I know there's a bolt somewhere in there where they mount the slider on the right side.

Maybe they thought one was enough. ...or maybe it's just to hang the clutch line on. The motor sticks out farther on the right so a subframe there would be harder to fit under the fairing there. They would have had to make the subframe bent to arch over the motor on the right and that would not be as strong.

Is that subframe the ONLY attachment point for that engine mount?

No. The engine mount hangs from the airbox/frame above. Two big bolts. The subframe doesn't support the motor. It might help make the arch shape of the airbox/frame more rigid which would indirectly support the weight of the motor.

What's the other side have there?Just the mount attaching to the engine and under that airbox frame part?I can't tell by looking at mine. I know there's a bolt somewhere in there where they mount the slider on the right side.

The right hand side has a similar bolt hole (empty) but it is a little higher up on the frame mount bracket. There is also a blank hole in the frame in front of the battery bo about the same position as the rear hole for the left subframe. Maybe they were thinking about putting a subframe on the right as well and decided it was not needed.

Yeah the bolt hole on the right engine mount is used to install a two point bracket for sliders. Same goes for the the hole on the left frame mount. The slider bracket bolts is on top of the subframe attachment. They are both held by the same bolt.

There's pics on this thread

We'll see what the boys at Bikeland have to say. I made a thread there.

I don't know about the Gen2 but the Gen1 left side subframe has the only bolt hole that fastens down the left side fairing. I guess it has to stay.

Rook I use a 14 gauge stranded wire from Negative side of Battery. This wire splits into two directions. Off this one wire I have a run to back of the bike and the other to the front. Anything and everything that requires a ground gets connected here. Even my chassis ground gets a second connection. This Insures bike is tied together. This is the only way for me. Done this way, If there is ever a issue with any of your electronics Ground can be ruled out. Hope this helps, cheers.

Thanks, Romans. I may go that rout. I see there is a hole in the battery box on the left side. a ground wire would pass through easily.
