I have been riding for 6 years and just Fell a little while ago and it was a slide into a turn. I'm fine, bike starts and minimal cosmetic damage thanks to frame slider. Question is, I had just left the gas station and topped off and when it fell and I picked it up I smelled GAS everywhere. But it started and fuel level was the same on dash. The bike was a little wet at the slider area. Is it normal for a good amount of gas to escape when the bike is laid down? I know I can't diagnose before I remove fairings but wanted to get an idea of the chances of a no leak situation

It is not unusual for the gas cap to leak if the fuel is high enough to reach the cap. This usually takes a little while to happen. I saw it happen on my tank after I removed it and set it down on te ground with almost no gas in it. Resting at that angle with the cap low and the back of the tank high, the gasket leaked. I would think with the tank full, it would happen much easier. If no hole in the tank, i bet that is all it was. Everything fuel related is pretty much protected by the gas tank, frame and fairings except maybe in the case of some major crashes. It would be a good idea to inspect the tank and fuel line but I'd be satisfied al was a-ok as long as you don't see any leaks after she is all fixed up.

I'm really sorry to hear about this misfortune and I'm glad it was not much worse for you and the bike. Glad the sliders saved it. Sometimes they cause more harm than they do prevent damage. If the sliders took most of the beating, I really would doubt there is anything wrong with fuel.

I am with Rook on this. More than likely just spill over from the full fuel tank.
