The ride that almost was - Dragon
05/22/18 2:28 PM

I'm going to bore you now with a post about how I was scheduled to go ride the Dragon / Blue Ridge Parkway / Cherohala Skyway etc again this past weekend but got rained out, postponed for 2 weeks, now looking like that one's rained out too. Rain chance on Fri Sat Sun next week is 80 80 60

Update: Just looked again, and now it's 50 50 80 ... still bad.

The Dragon ain't much fun in the rain. We've packed up our toys and went back home (in the Midwest) a couple times over the near 30 years we've been going down there. We are planning to go down there in Sept when most of the squids are back in school. Hopefully less traffic and no rain. This will be my first time with the ZX14R, can't wait. Previous rides down there have been an '88 600 and '88 1000 Hurricane, and 3 Blackbirds.

Omni - Ugh, driving back home because of rain would suck!

We're planning to go sometime around Sept, too ... weather or not this current ride pans out

Maybe I'll see you there.

BTW the big ZX handles the Dragon and all those curves more than just fine. I'm no skilled racer but even I can do pretty well up there. I never feel like it's a big heavy ill handling beast. i.e. I don't think I'd be much faster on any other lighter, better handling race bike.

The Blackbird was great on the those roads and I expect the ZX14 to be as good or better. My 84 yr old dad and I are excited to to go. I bought his 07 650 Ninja he rode to Calif twice and a few times at the Dragon. He just got a new 400 Ninja and is excited to put it through it's paces on the Dragon and Cherohala. The old man is small, (and shrinking hence the down size), but impressively fast.

My dad's 80 and he still rides but thank god he aint fast.

If he aint fast enough to pull his fingers away before he table saws the tips off, I'm glad he's slow on the bike.

Welp, the trip is officially off ... postponed until Sept.

The rain chance in Maggie Valley NC for this Fri - Sun when we were to be there is currently sitting at 80%, 30%, 30% ... and over the past week or so has been as high as 90% Fri, 80% Sat and 60% Sun. It's from the storm in the Gulf that's headed north. They just can't tell how far it will make it.

Sux for three 50 year olds actually getting organized to make such a trip, then having to watch the bad weather, and finally having to call it off and try to re-schedule.
