GIVI PLX V35 MOUNTS?
08/28/09 10:29 AM

Does any one that has these hard bags know if you have to modify the sw motech mounts to get them to work with the us zx14....I have a competition werkes fender eliminator installed and from the pictures Ive seen of these mounts it looks like they use the original rear fender to mount them...any help is appreciated

Thanks

Chris

I've got 'em. Although I dont have a fender eliminator, I dont see how this would effect you. The only mod is a slight cut in the black trim under the rear side panels to fit the mounting tab. Look at the youtube video twisted throttle has posted and you can see the install from a-z.

SW Motech detachable racks for the V35 Cases are no problem with a fender elimanator, the rear piece will be secure as it attaches to the side racks. I leave mine assembled (all three pieces), when I take it on and off.

Those SW Motech Racks are a perfect fit. Only mod I had to make was to drop my exhaust, which is aftermarket. (Area P)

I have a similar system as motordog1 and it works great. I have an Arata 4 in 1 so I had to modify the brackets a bit where they bolt on to the exhaust mountings. Nothing serious. With stock sustem, perfect fit. Just the tail piece above the light has to be trimmed to fit the bracket. Mine is a system off a ZZR 1400 which is the touring version of the ZX 14 in SA. Differences were rear grab handle, ABS brakes and no seat cover for ZZR.

Yes, as I acquire pieces for the transformation of my 08, I just got the Euro top tail cover from Twisted Throttle, in mms so it matches. Now I can get the SW-MOTECH top box rack and won't have to cut anything up there.

The top tail cover only cost $63, but some might want to cut theirs and save the money. I will put my stock piece in the box with the others pieces that are being replaced with carbon fiber, in case I ever want to put it all back to stock condition.

I've decided to use the other SW-MOTECH side bag rack mount, the non-PLX one, so I can mount better bags than the V35s. Not a lot bigger, but big enough to hold two full-face helmets.

I also really need to plan on putting an Ohlins R/T shock back there or maybe a kit, to accomodate the weight.

With Convertibars or the LSL kit, it should turn out pretty nice to sport tour with.

I'm thinking about the same thing in the new year. But I've heard that luggage racks get in the way of the adjusters for that shock. I've had a look at the install instructions for both the Givi and SW-Motech racks but I can't figure out which one would cause a problem.

Has anyone installed the Ohlins R/T shock with luggage ?

KTRIC, my family and I will be vacationing in Southern Germany this July, and I'm looking forward to seeing my old stomping grounds when I was in the US Army in Augsburg back in 1993-95, Heldelberg 1991-1993, and Stuttgart 1990-1991! I'm very interested in the GIVI bags for my ZX14 here in the US, as I don't think I will be buying a new bike anytime soon. Any more pics of your modifications would be appreciated! Thanks.

Hey Motordog1,

Did you have any clearance issuse with your aftermarket Yoshimrua exhaust system? When I order the SW-Motch bracket from Twisted Throttle the salesman asked me if I had the stock exhaust or an aftermarket exhaust on my bike. He said that some aftermarket exhausts are up higher and will not allow the V35 cases to fit on the bracket. I have the Yoshimura (exhaust (which to me seems to sit lower, in tighter, and is shorter in length). I am a bit worried now..... (hopefully you can put my mind at rest)- LOL

Thanks for your help,

Regarding clearance betweeen the Yosh slipons and the V35 case and SW Motech racks. It is a close fit 1/4 inch or less on my bike. even if they would touch on occassion which mine don't, the carbon fiber never gets that hot. This setup has worked very well for me.

Motordog1,

Thanks for posting pictures of your setup. It is always nice to have the luxary of someone else breaking trail.

I could live with 1/4" of clearance (and like you suggested, the carbon fiber should not get hot like standard metal pipes.

When moving the air flow should ensure that the exhaust itself does not heat up or dirty the bottom of the V35 cases. What about idling or crawling through hot summer traffic infested city streets (heat issues, carbon / dirt)? If this is a problem, is there a carbon fiber tape or something you can get to help shield the bottom of the case while make the least amount of visual impact. (not that I spend much time idling & I avoid city streets and traffic like the plague)

I was wondering what to do for the back lower cross brace (I see you used the one provided in the bracket kit and just ran it under your license plate). I was going to manufacture a plate holder that extended down another 40mm so that the cross brace could bolt to it. Do you thing the additional attachment point is required? (I can't see the original plastic under fender tongue offering much help) If I went your route I could mount the rectangular red reflector, that came stock on the bike and was originally attached to the lowest end of the plastic under fender tongue.

My V35 cases should be here in a few days........ the Sw-Motech bracket kit (gulp) will not show up until April 20th. Apparently there is no stock in North America - good thing I am starting this early.

Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it.

Well my Givi Gloss Black V35 hard side bags and insertbags showed up today around lunch time. I have to say that I was quite impressed. I ordered the SW-Motech brackets but they will not be here until mid April. I am greatful for the advice and examples several members on this site provided.

Thanks again everyone,

Spyglass

Regarding the rear bracket, with the stock rear plastic, it would mount using the license plate bolts and stay permanetnty attached. The plastic fender does nothing more than hold it in place when the racks are not installed. Really the rear portion of the rack setup just locks the racks together in the back, the three mounting points on the side of the bike are what lock it onto the bike. I just leave mine together, (the two side pieces and rear piece when I install and uninstall and hang it on the wall as one unit.

Look in the Pictures section, I have full Givi with SW-Motech removeable side rack, v35 side cases, and the E52 top cases. Works great.
