HID & Halo's
07/09/09 9:06 PM

Since they are going to be pulling my bike apart anyway (recent drop I told you folks about on another thread), I was thinking that now would be a good time for a lighting upgrade.

I was thinking 55W HID's and a set of them thar Halo thingy's (the red halo against the matt black of the bike would look fooly sic mate).

A couple of questions though......

1) are the halo's on all the time?

2) what does this addition do to the electrical energy balance of the bike (watts made by the alternator v's energy spent running the electric's)

Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with HID lighting on the ZX14

LOTS of experience w/ HIDs - I've done it twice and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. In fact I would make it my first mod on a new bike.

The 35W HIDs definitely draw less current than your stock head lamps - and I've got a 55W kit installed w/ stock headlight fuse and it runs no problem.

Try to get the smaller ballasts - the big ones look about twice as large as the smaller ones and why deal with them when you can get the smaller ones? :)

It's really not that hard an install - gotta take off some plastic, the bulbs have like a bayonet mount so you turn and pull and they come out - put the new ones in the same orientation and turn and they're mounted. Wiring isn't too much more difficult either - just follow the directions in your kit.

Mount the ballasts someplace reasonably secure - ensure you have full range of motion of the handlebars - turn from stop to stop to ensure nothing hangs up.

Good luck,
-Dennis

I have Halos on mine. They are ran by a toggle switch. I can turn them off and on whenever. They look real good when done right. I switched all my 4 headlights to HIDs. You will light up 4 lanes of the highway.

Some people have done well going through eBay. I bought my last HID kit from:
DDM Tuning

The 35W system works really well, I went for the 55W H11 (low beam) system... it might be overkill, but I REALLY want them to see me. :)
Some have done their high beam as well - those are H9 lights.

Color temp wise:
I like 6000K but to each his own. I think around 4300K is bright white - go lower and you get increasing yellow in the light color, go higher and you get increasing blue or violet in the light color. Also the higher the color temp the less real illumination you get.

I got my low beam from DDM and really was a piece of cake the installation (20 minutes) plug n play with lifetime warranty on the ballast which are super slim

I paid extra for express and it was just a few days... Don't remember exactly how long.

Oh, while you're in there you might think of tweaking your lights up a bit (3 or 3.5 turns or so) - there's a thread here on how to and there's a section in your owners manual.
