New Owner - Arizona
08/12/17 8:41 AM

Hi Folks,

A couple months ago I picked up a clean 06' with 13K miles, full Yoshimura rs3 carbon (4:1) and PCIII. The stock ZX14 fits me as perfect as any bike I have ever owned, and it suits the wife well, she likes the human backpack position. I'm located in Navajo County a few miles north of Show Low, Arizona. Now that I'm retired I can pretty much ride any day the weather permits, and we have a lot of nice riding days in this area.

Hi ES welcome to Club 14! I consider it unfortunate that Kawasaki hasn't made a Gen 2 in that color... just a stunning color of blue!

Welcome Eagle,
Foe even more comfort try 1" bar risers and a seat off a Concourse. My wife loves the Connie seat. We've done multiple state rides and no sore butts.

Thank You Vic. The first 06' I bought there wasn't a color choice, the first delivered to Phoenix were all red. I thought that was amusing beings how I already had a red Honda VTR1000 and red Honda ST1300A in the garage. Back then it was the era of 'give me a ticket first, red' and I immediately joined the club becoming a frequent flyer and alumni of the every two year club. Most of the speed violation I got a warning and the others I managed to talk down to below criminal speed. I was lucky with some nice and cooperative patrol cops. Well one wasn't very nice, but he was cooperative. At four times criminal (20 mph over times 4!) I guess he cut me a large break reducing it to 18 mph over and I did deserve the lecture and hard time (Oh, shit I digress).

I think black is my favorite color, and wasn't looking for the blue, but the more I ride, the more I like it. It is my wife's favorite color and it does seem to shine up pretty good, and a bit easier to keep clean than my black VFR800A. Hopefully I have matured enough to avoid the speed tickets, but even at my age I admit the temptation to get into the mid 3 digit speeds is overwhelming, and I am now past due to attend another class! Maybe the blue will attract less attention. Probably not!!

Perhaps the maturing comes with the when and where mid triple digits occur? No one on these bikes can avoid them - can they? A most kind officer let me ride away with out a ticket after passing him on a nearly (repeat nearly) abandoned stretch of highway at 80 over limit before backing off when seeing the flashing lights come on. Pulled over, took off helmet and gloves and extended arms (assuming the cuff me position) before he got out of his car. Lucky boy that day or perhaps just pathetic or both. Enjoying these bikes in good health and traffic tariff free will be my wish for us all.

Agree Dagwood, with age perhaps we have better judgment when to extend our youth and when to restrain it! From working on the other side of it, I learned the advantage of just pulling over and not get the officer into a high speed chase. They stay calm, we stay calm, cooperation and admitting they have us, may go a long way in our favor to get cut a courtesy. I had one officer tease me because I didn't run and he didn't get to blow the carbon out of his Charger. I teased back and offered to do a drag off with him.....no ticket. With all that said, I knock on wood, as I'm about to leave on a ride to Payson to have lunch with my daughter, and it is right through deer/elk and DPS country. Hopefully I will miss bambi and the Highway Patrol.

My rule is "if you see them hit the shoulder, just pull off to the side immediately." Obviously they aren't burning a U-ie because they forgot their donuts. The other rule I do my best to follow is to never go fast anywhere where anyone on the road can see me and slow down immediately when another vehicle comes into site. I assume any car out there is a cop car.

That's a good rule Rook.

"The other rule I do my best to follow is to never go fast anywhere where anyone on the road can see me and slow down immediately when another vehicle comes into site. I assume any car out there is a cop car."

This one I find difficult to follow, probably half the time! In Arizona 'criminal' speed is 20 mph over, or over 85 mph. Quite often traffic is rolling 85-90 in a 65 dual lane state highway. I have to admit it is difficult to hold it down when soccer moms are passing me! Our DPS shoots radar front and rear on the roll. If the traffic is light, it's easier to spot the highway patrol, but they are using various cars with those mini light setups or no external lights. Maybe I should invest in a radar detector, but not having one for many years I'm not sure if they are that effective.

One of the only good twisty roads in my area is marked at 40 mph. Yet, including a margin of speed safety, this road is good for speeds from 65 to 140. Fortunately this isn't a road that our DPS patrols, although occasionally SO will patrol it. The greater hazards are the dual lane state roads that connect the various tourist hot spots. I usually keep up with traffic and space between the packs. Me to officer, "just keeping up with traffic and staying between the packs, sir", has yielded a verbal "slow it down" warning on several occasions, even from one officer pointing out there was no traffic at the time!

Although my need for speed has matured, it still takes discipline on the 14 to hold it down, and sometimes I just have to let her rip. And, with the wife riding co-pilot, she likes to feel triple digits at least once on every ride, my kind of gal.

I remember seeing 75 mph speed limits posted out there about 20 years back. Of course, 75 mph is nothing going straight down the road.

I guess it depends on what type of signals your police use for radar. The older one (K-band I think they call it) is easy to detect but you might find the detector going off for all sorts of things that aren't even police. A few years ago there was a lot of talk about laser blockers but I haven't heard a peep in a very long time. I don't know if they work or not. You can detect laser but that means they got you.

Rook: I remember seeing 75 mph speed limits posted out there about 20 years back. Of course, 75 mph is nothing going straight down the road.

Yea, we have four interstates in Arizona, the 40, 10, 17 and 8. They are all 75 mph outside of any metro areas. On these roads DPS often doesn't cut much slack. I've heard from many riders and cagers that were pulled off for running 5 over!

Rook: I don't know if they work or not. You can detect laser but that means they got you.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking. I not sure, but would imagine our DPS is using the rather sophisticated type that is hard to beat.

Thank You for the welcome. I've never been very good at the ride report thing. I need to work on that. I am starting a DIY design of the pendulum mount for an older GoPro Hero 3 camera, that will mount front looking forward and just at the rear of the seat looking aft. This is basically to use while filming other riders, as in those mounted positions, nothing on my bike will show in the recording.
