ZX-14 to ZX-10 Front Fender Mod
07/06/14 12:33 AM

Hi Guy's,

I've always felt the large chunky stock front fender on my 2007 ZX-14 was quite ugly and wanted to change it to something that was more streamlined and pleasing to the eye like the one that comes standard on my brothers GSXR-1000.
I only just learned of the ZX-14 to ZX-10 front fender mod, and so after checking out the posts on this and other ZX-14 forums decided to give it a go.
Now I know that the ZX-14 will never win a beauty contest against bikes like the Ducati 916, but in my opinion this simple change has transformed the look of the bike.
It's a very simple process and pretty much anyone can do it.
Purchasing the matching 06-07 ZX-10 Candy Plasma Blue front fender was no problem. I decided on the black side arms instead of all blue because I thought that look was better after checking out pics on the net. I also added a Fenda Extenda to protect the radiator as much as possible even though I already have a radiator guard installed.
The only challenge I had was getting the required brackets.
I contacted the only two suppliers I could find (in the US) and both would not respond to my email requests to purchase. Perhaps it was because I am in Australia or maybe business is too bloody good for them!
So I decided to design my own, made plastic templates up and had the brackets custom made out of stainless steel at a metal workshop close to where I live. The brackets cost me $50AU where as if I purchased from the US suppliers it would have been around the $100AU mark (bracket plus ridiculously inflated shipping costs!). Plus they only would have supplied the brackets in aluminium.
Because the custom made brackets are made from stainless, they are much thinner, do not require countersunk bolts that the thicker aluminium versions have, and are infinitely stronger. Yes they are probably a little heavier as well.
If anyone is struggling to get these brackets like i did and would like the basic details and measurements I am happy to post here but please understand I am not an engineer and can take no responsibility for any related issues or mismeasurements.
But then I'm sure you will check my work thoroughly :)
And at least you wouldn't have to deal with potentially unhelpful and expensive suppliers.
It would also be great to give back to this forum as so many here have kindly helped me in the past.
Anyway, see attached pics.
I'm really happy with the results...

Yup. I love the look. I put the stock fender back on for one day for some high speed testing to make sure there was no negative effect. Lets just say the zxq0 fender is back kn and will be staying on.

Hi fatsix,
That was my only concern.
How is the new front fender at speed (250-270km/h) as I haven't had a chance to run the bike quickly since the change?
What did you find?
Any difference at all?

Hi ZX-14R / All,
Please see below.
Sorry its not as clear as I would like and also "busy" but I tried to give more information rather than less.
The pic can be saved and then enlarged to make it a little easier to read.
The bracket is also drawn to scale so if you have the facility to size and print to correct dimensions you automatically have a ready made template.
Please note that unlike some other brackets on the market, there are only one set of inner mounting holes for standard ZX-14 wheel and tyre sizes. If you are using non standard sized wheels or tyres, do not use this bracket.
Please feel free to ask any questions if needed.
Hope it helps.

So you nut and bolt the fender on with your bracket?

Yep.
The two inner holes of the bracket are holes only and nut and bolt the bracket to the existing left and right arm frames. A small bracket used for the stock fender is removed first.
Then the two outer holes of the bracket are used to connect the ZX-10 fender to the brackets and are tapped to accept the M6 bolts that come from the existing stock fender assembly...

I got a very cheap Yanna Shiki front fender for my Gen1 a couple years ago. It's extremely lightweight. Probably lighter than an OEM ZX-10 fender and looks almost identical. It has a mold bur along the edge that could be sanded out and it is no nearly as thick and ridged as the OEM ZX-14 fender but a lot lighter and so far has shown no ill effects from being run at speeds up to 160 mph. It bolts right on to the ZX-14 fender brackets. Cheap alternative to a ZX-10 fender but not up to the same quality standards, I'm sure.

Nice work on planning out that bracket yannih.

Hi Rook,
Good to hear from you and again thanks for all the help you have given me in the past.

Yeah, I knew there were quite a few alternatives out there to choose from. I did quite a bit of research into which way I was going to go.
I ended up choosing the option I did because I liked the look and shape of the original ZX-10 fender along with the added advantage of the perfect matching Candy Plasma Blue and black color coding. No respraying needed. And of course by staying OEM I knew I was getting an option that was designed for speed and strength and of course had inherent Kawasaki quality.

The custom bracket was made through pure frustration of not being able to buy the ready made version.
But I hope that someone might get some use and benefit from it.
I can advise it mounts the ZX-10 front fender to my ZX-14 perfectly and am really pleased with the result.

Not to dig up bones from a dated thread, but thanks a ton for the bracket schematic, yannih.....will surely save me some time and trouble fabbing one from scratch. I've wanted to do this mod for some time, but never did pursue it. I've had a recent incident where something kicked up from an adjacent car on the highway and ( whatever it was ) struck my fender and right side fairing, so now I may as well go through with the fender swap instead of replacing/repairing my stocker. Mine is atomic silver, so a factory color matched ZX10 fender may not exist? Starting my research all over again now so I'll find out soon enough whether I'll need to pay for paint or not.

Shit, fatsix, I don't remember seeing a zx10 fender on that bike.... Guess I was too busy watching you wreck in front of me! Lol. I've been considering doing this mod to get my front end lower to the ground. Don't know whether or not if it's actually worth it or not. Are there any negatives to drag racing with this mod?

What about the exposed inner fork tubes?Nice mod...but those tubes are kinda spendy...not to mention the labor time involved in replacing one.Might want to consider somehow attaching the 14 fender skirts on there?Just a thought.

Far as I can tell, My Yanna Shiki fender covers as much fork as the OEM fender. Very lightweight but chinsy material it's made of. DO NOT tighten the bolts hard or it will crack. Don't use the OEM clipon nut bracket either or it will rotate and bust the plastic.

Fork Tubes??? i'd worry more about the rad, even with the stock fender. I have an fenda extenda on my zx10 fender.

Pleasure Hellmut.

Grn, while the fork tubes are not protected as much as they are with the original ZX-14 front fender, the ZX-10 fender does protect them quite well if you get down quite low and look from the front of the bike.

And I think a fender extender is a pretty vital component on this mod...

By the way, I have had quite a few trips away plus a track day with speeds up to 300km/h with plenty of cruising at 180-220km/h and there has been absolutely no negative effects with feel, performance or hardware damage or failure relating to this mod.

IDK how close the shape of my Yanna Shiki is to the ZX-10 fender but no major rad damage on mine. I guess a fender extender would be a wise precaution though.

I removed the stock rock guard from my busa fender and no ill effects there either. Maybe we just have clean roads?

There was a guy who used to speed test his bikes. He started with a ZX-14R and he put a Hayabusa fender on that one.
