I can't believe nobody has started a 2020 BMW thread

The BMW S1000rr hasn't given a thing to the Japanese competition for a decade. I suspect this will hold true fro the next decade. The Bimmer is less expensive and better than the new ZX-10. How can you beat that?

Yes BMW S1000rr with M package. That's the one. I've paid for my ZX-14 twice now with mods. Just spend the money up front and get everything you could ever ask for you're good for 10 years easy and then you won't want to get rid of that bike ever anyway. That's how it works with me.

I think that Bimmer might be my next bike. Gotta look at financing. Definitely a GREAT history. Iconic, will stand the test of time. Only thing, the first Gen went through so many upgrades with every coming year, I am hesitant to buy the first year of the latest Gen. It will probably get even better.

What do you say to 207 hp out of 426 fully fueled lbs of superbike? I'm in if I can afford it.

I say go for it and just get the extended warranty. Its not like these guys can risk the brand on flaws and reliability design f'ups. What I did here around here, as many guys bought the S1000RR over the yrs is that there was a lot of warranty work and bike in and out of the dealership to keep it running correctly. This Revision with fully integrated electronics and attitude control and suspension will probably need updates and software drops as bugs get worked out. As long as the dealer is not that far you should be fine with a great Machine.

The Common Tread Revzilla guys did a good review from a BMW demo day at Barber

Problem 1--Stock race equipment is often inferior to aftermarket race equipment. It's cheaper than aftermarket but not better. Stock Brembo brakes on the Hayabusa and other bikes for example. They are better than older stock brakes but not very good compared to a high end Brembo.

The article says the M package is only 7.7 lbs lighter than the standard 2020 S1000rr. I would expect the M lithium battery to cut at least that much alone. I am wary of the CF rims. Are they as good or better than aftermarkets CF rims? The article says the uninstalled CF rims "were insanely light" when handled. If they are heavier than BST, I think I'd rather just get BST on a base model. Same goes fro the battery. If its;s heavier than a Shorai, why pay extra for it?

Problem 2--Scheduled maintenance. I will spend an arm and a leg on the bike and then I have to bring it to a shop to have expensive maintenance done that I would normally insist on doing myself for free + parts. You don't have your oil changed by a BMW shop, you won't be able to rev past 7000 until you do. $$$

Problem 3---Special Tools. Are there tools that can only be had by a BMW shop? When the time comes that my S1000 has it's ECU totally derestricted, I'm sure not going to keep going to the shop to do maintenance.

and Problem 4---insurance. I will need financing so I will need to have full coverage. Liability for my ZX-14 is about $60/6 months. Full coverage on a 2020 BMW S1000?? My guess would be $250/year which would not be bad.

Rook: My experience with German vehicles has been that they are insanely costly to maintain compared to Japanese vehicles. The Germans always seem to do the most elegant and COMPLEX solution for any given vehicle feature. This makes the vehicles very sophisticated, which is great until they need service, at which point you discover a few things:

- The service required is beyond what you can do "at home" with normal home facilities and without special tools and special training

- The parts required are insanely costly compared to Japanese parts.

As an example, I briefly owned a Mercedes AMG C63 (475hp 6.3 liter V8 car that costs $100,000 in Canada if bought new) which I bought used for a great price, and got the dealer to throw in a service contract because of warnings from online friends about the costs of service and repairs. I never needed to use the service contract, but only because I only kept the car for a few months, as my wife hated its complexity. But while owning it, here are some of the incidents that other forum members, with and without service contracts, reported on the C63 forum:

- All pre-2012 C63s eventually blow a head gasket because the head bolts were improperly heat treated. No problem if still under warranty. $6000 problem if out of warranty (no Mercedes "goodwill" repairs)

- A normal brake job costs $5000 on that car, mostly due to overpriced parts. My salesman made a big deal out of the fact that the one I was buying had already had a recent brake job done, so I need not put aside $5000 anytime soon (before he realized that I was going to demand a free service contract). Multiple forum members encountered this surprise cost while I was a forum member. Who would even imagine that a brake job could cost $5000?

- The headlights are singing and dancing fancy units that follow the steering and also automatically adjust vertically to changes in the car's stance due to varying number of passengers. Great. Until one gets damaged or simply fails. Each headlight can only be replaced as a complete unit. Cost = $5000. No kidding. One of the forum members had to pay that when his wife accidentally hit something in the garage with the headlight taking the hit.

- ALL dealer services endure "the Mercedes AMG tax". NO service and NO part is exempt.

- Every single aftermarket part is priced knowing that Mercedes AMG customers are used to being gouged. A decent exhaust system for example was $4500.

Every single BMW motorcycle owner I have known, without exception, has commented on the extremely high ownership costs compared to Japanese bikes.

Rook, you've been warned. :)

I think you forgot a "0" on that $250 probably more like $2500/year.

I've owned a used gs and bought a new gs. Old one had an output shaft seal leak, the new one started to show brass shavings from the trans oil changes. Never again. Same with a duc. Wouldn't touch it due to the electronics.

ZX-14? Had zero problems with the last 4 bikes. Nothing but miles of smiles. I learned my lesson.

Thanks, Jim. Strike one.

If that's the case, forget it! I'd never give an insurance company that kind of money! That's ridiculous. I will check with my insurance just for fun.

Same here. The Gen2 caught me at a bad time but the Gen3 just might do it for me. I think it will be 3 years. That is when the new busa is expected to be in production (if they actually ever make a new one).

The S1000 would sure be a nice new bike though. It's the most exciting thing to come along in a while considering the price tag.

Yep, insurance stopped me from a used HP4 a few yrs ago. BBW is $500/yr full coverage, pretty good for LA, HP4 was in the $3k range - NFW

Same. My ongoing search for a replacement for my now 6 year old ZX has yielded nothing that tingles me, so by default it looks like I'm also awaiting the next big ZX.

Actually briefly considered this black/gray ZX, but meh, not enough to justify a trade:

Same here.

But to be honest - I think Kawasaki won't bring us a new version :-(
I think their answer to our questions for a ZX15..16.. 17 (?!) is: H2SX. Unfortunately.
Not that I really don't like it, but it's not the same.
The H2SX is not the king in the ring as the ZX14R is for me.

I got a rough quote from my insurance guy.

Full coverage with highest deductible: $459/6 months, lower coverage to comp for storage, $77/6 months.

I could see keeping that new bike in storage 9 months a year. I think 6 months of full coverage would last me almost two years and by then I'd just about have the bike paid off IF I get a low financing rate.

I did NOT get a low rate when I recently asked for financing on the truck of my choice....so you know what? I got something I could afford instead. I'll go in and look at the new S1000 when they come to the nearest BMW dealership which is ~200 miles away. Should be about 2 months.

I got an itchy trigger finger and all I need is a good loan.

Rook, as I said earlier, maintenance costs on that BMW could make the insurance look cheap in comparison. And assuming only 3 months use for every 12 months seems like wasting the purchase money, especially since the first 2 years are the ones where you suffer the most depreciation. So, highest "real" cost per month while getting only 25% usage. Seems like a pretty high cost per hour of actual usage.

But, you have been smitten, and I know how that goes. You'll end up buying one despite the costs. :)

I'm doing my homework, Jim. I think the scheduled maintenance is included with the purchase of the bike? As far as depreciation goes, that means nothing to me. I don't ever expect to sell any of my bikes. Using the bike sparingly the first couple years is actually saving me more years of trouble free riding.
