Anybody checked tankslapper out yet?
04/19/11 12:20 PM

In looking for new protective films for my bike I came across this site which seems to have everything I need in one kit for $50. Just wondering if anyone has bought this stuff and what it looks like/how it holds up?

$50 for the entire kit??? wow I think i spent close to $200 (was a couple of years ago now) for my 3M kit (looks good, works well, expect thoes stupid rocks that bounce off my jacket and still take chips out of the only spots on the tank that aren't protected)...

Well the 3M kit is nearly $100, but tankslapper has their own film that is slightly easier to work with so it is said. I went to my paint supplier and a 4 inch strip 6 feet long is $50 for pete's sake! This crap gets expensive! I found an Ebay'er that sells 4footX6foot sheets for cars for about $50 which is getting your money's worth but then you still have to cut it out and apply it. I'm having second thoughts about having plastic all over the bike but I think I might get a few pieces for the fairing lowers behind the front wheel. It's nice you can buy just the area you need instead of the whole kit if you want.

Still haven't found just the right thing for my tank yet...:(

I'm almost tempted to sew my own damn bra for the tank. With all the touring/commuting I do a bra is really the only real protection that works IMO.

Edge, MagKnight makes a really nice bra with good tank coverage, plus good coverage where your knees would contact the tank. downside is its pretty pricy.

Yeah. I like the Mag-knight a bunch, but at this time of the year I'm just plain outa cashola unfortunately. That and I'm cheap. lol

I bought the Tank Slapper kit a few years ago. I got the kit that was NOT adhesive backed. It just kind of stuck on by static electricity, or something. I got a couple pieces on OK, but could NOT get the bubbles out of one of the big pieces, so I shit canned it. I left the couple little pieces on for a year or two, then just peel off the small pieces, too.
The plastic never shined like the nice waxed finish of the paint. Pretty aggravating trying to get the plastic to bend around all the compound angles of the top of the tank without folds or bubbles.
Perhaps the kit with the adhesive would be easier. I don't know.
I had a Magknight on my CBR1100XX and liked it. Fit was good and lasted forever. I pulled it off MANY times during wash/wax and it goes back on (and sticks) with ease.

I bought the full kit with 3m and Tankslapper mixed. Tankslapper material on the top of the tank and back, with 3m on the front fender, nose, and headlights. Would recommend the 3m, but not the Tankslapper. I mainly wanted it between my magnetic tank bag and my tank and the slapper is mostly a pain in the butt. Doesn't stay on worth a hoot - good protection when it does and fairly easy to install. So my opinion is buy the all 3m kit if any. YMMV

Yes. I've had the non-adhesive Tankslapper kit on my 07 SE since new. I have the 5 piece kit (no tank top).
No problem installing since I did it while warm out. Otherwise use a hair dryer to soften it up a bit. Make sure it's "clean" before installation! lol
After almost 4 years of use there's only one section that has discolored...where heat escapes from under the upper fairing.
I've had it off and re-installed several times while washing.

Yeah I would imagine it would work best on a newer clean surface.
