maintenance on 07zx14
12/12/14 6:00 AM

So I am the owner of a 07 zx14. It has a little over 18K miles on her. Soon it will be approaching 8 years old! I was wondering if there were any items that I should be checking beyond the normal maintenance items due to its age on a regular basis. Any rubber seals, hoses, etc. This may be a pointless topic but I have always been curious how one should be maintaining an older bike with low mileage.

All of my OEM stuff that hasn't been replaced is fine.

It's all in the SM. There are tutorials in the How-To section, also. I wrote a bunch but there are others as well.

Check head cover gasket
chain sprockets
spark plugs
valve lash clearance
fluids, oil regularly of course.

I think that's the main things that need to be looked at but if you only have 18k miles, you're probably a-OK on all. I checked my valves at 24k and a couple were in need of adjustment.

excellent. Caz I have changed my plugs in the last 3K miles. Oil / filter is fresh. Chain and sprocket still looks good. No oil leaks to contend with. And I was planning on having my valves checked around 20K. Well excellent, good news.

Battery. Most stockers last 2-3 years. If your's needs replacing, I'd go with a Shorai or other lithium iron/lightweight battery.

Might want to clean and lube throttle cables/grip, and levers some time. but thats's pretty routine 1ce, twice / year.

ROOK: I'd go with a Shorai or other lithium iron/lightweight battery

SLOWMO: WHY? is it only because the battery is lighter or is there another hitch to it

Well, the main reason is that it is about a fifth of the weight of the stocker. The other reason, my stocker lasted two years. My Shorai has lasted 4 years and still going strong. ...and it is smaller than what Shorai recommends for the 14. I've let it go without a maintainer for long periods (like months) a few times but keep it on the Shorai maintainer over winter storage. Also, NO corrosion at all on the Shorai. The first year it developed a yellowish crust on the poles but that scraped off easily. I have used dialectric grease on the poles and never saw anything again except for some dust that stuck to grease. I've had no problems with the Shorai. Just put the maintainer on CHARGE over night before the first ride of the season and your all set. I still think led acids are fine. The lithium/irons are the latest thing in lightweight and so far, seem to outlast traditional batteries.

I didn't notice any real difference in handling with the weight loss of the battery alone but it all ads up.

I put a Shorai LFX21A6-BS12 in my 06. You can put the LFX14 in but the 21 offfers morer cranking power. So far it spins right up even after sitting a while. The 21 is almost the same size as the stock bettery but is MUCH lighter. I thought the box was empty when I got it in the mail.
