Sportbike Suspension Tuning San Diego
10/16/15 12:19 PM

Have an appointment tomorrow with Sportbike Suspension Tuning (http://www.sportbikesuspensiontuning.net/) tomorrow to have stock suspension dialed in to my weight and riding style, will report back. Very curious on this low cost ($40) service. I have not touched any of the settings that came with the bike so I am reasonably confident there is some room to improve. Immediately to be followed by a "spirited" jaunt through some well known San Diego back roads. Update coming Monday...

Reporting back...for those of you (like me) who have not ever even touched any of the suspension adjusters...wow, what a difference!! First, the guy asked me some general questions about riding style etc, then did some suspension compressions with and without me on the bike, took some measurements, and then went to work with wrenches and screwdrivers. About 30 minutes later, bike was ready. Wish I had done it sooner and on previous bikes, but the bike now handles MUCH better, no pogoing, no harshness, no wallowing, turn in is better, front end dive is much less on hard braking. Color me impressed, and so glad I had it done! Only bad side that I can see is that the increased smoothness and composure leads to increased cornering speeds...tickets...hooliganism... :-)

How was the ride over harsh bumps affected?

My bike was a wallowing pig when I bought it. Did some basic set up and it was tons better. Took it to Catylist Reaction here in my area to adjust some more since I was having tire cupping issues riding fast 2-up. Now everything is as good as the stock suspension can get. Well worth the $40.For a big heavy bike it is suprisingly sensitive to set ups.A small change can make a big difference.

@Hank, world of difference! Sharp edged bumps, pot holes, surface level differences, even freeway expansion joints etc, SO much smoother. And leaned over in a turn, bumps that used to push front end off line due to chattering/bouncing, gone.
I really didn't expect the results I got, and for $40 and 45 minutes time investment, amazing results.

@hank
No, I did not, but, there is a lot of variables anyway between my weight (too much haha), Givi bags+racks, but then Scorpion Carbon mufflers as an offset from stock cans. I would imagine any race-shop could recommend a suspension guy in your neck of the woods.

Thru the years, I've tinkered with a good bit of suspension parts and set ups.
A good friend of mine builds and rebuilds shocks, has his own shock/fork dyno and collaborates with both Ohlins and Penske. He set up my Blackbird a number of times but never eliminated a certain harshness over "square" bumps. He hasn't looked at my 14r yet but will, next time I get down to Asheville NC.
I've gone in all directions with adjustments but am still unsatisfied. Tuning suspension remains to me, kind of like a black art. I know what each adjustment does, I just can't get them to work together as a package.
I asked a specific question which reflects ongoing problems which I think are the result of a racy setup and shitty roads in the northeast. I was hoping your guy hit just the right combo and wanted to give it a try.

@Hank, sorry, I wish I knew what he did, and I had two XXs myself, great bikes, put 40k or so miles on each. As I recall, the XX did not have all the adjustability of the 14R suspension anyway, not 100% on that. Either way, hopefully your buddy can get you all dialed in!

No problem.
My Blackbird was one of the best bikes I ever owned.
40,000 trouble free miles after I turboed it.
I had a stock shock, a stock shock with Hyperpro spring, a Penske double clicker and a Penske triple clicker.
In the front I had stock, Hyperpro, a various weight springs of different manufacturers.
I also used Cogent Dynamics valves, Racetech valves and finally Penske Supersport valves,(comp & rebound with each)
I could go on, but like I said, I tried a bunch of different setups, all done on Ricks (Cogent Dynamics)dyno, but never hit that magic setup.
This bike has a much better suspension off the bat, along with full adjustability. I have it close but am having problems with harshness on square bumps. Perhaps I'm asking for to much...who knows!
Thanks for the reply :)
