2012 onwards zx14R turbos
01/09/16 1:25 AM

So i'm looking at a new (2016) ZX14R (with ohlins, + Brembos) as i've always wanted a turbo bike. I like to go out to the drags once a month, but also commute daily on the beast. I want to keep stock wheelbase for the handling aspect. I do about 15,000 k's a year (almost 10K miles) so reliability is a requirement for me. I'll likely get it, run it in, get used to the 14, then chuck a turbo kit on in ~12 months and do some drag racing @ stock wheel base.

Looking at the turbo kits RCC seems a popular choice on an unopened motor. Is 300hp ATW too much to aim for on an unopened motor? Assuming zx14r + RCC kit + Fuel upgrades (pump/injectors) and custom dyno tune. I'm getting some mixed reports that its only possible on E85 (no thanks, too hard to find). I know the piston ringlands are "weak" (i.e. not as much additional headroom) on zx14s but thought i'd ask anyway. I know valve springs may be required at those levels also. I'll pretty much do all modifications myself (sound mechanical knowledge) just get the tuning done by a trusted local dyno operator (who has turbo bike experience).

As someone who has turbo'd a ZX14R, what can you tell me from experience as "must do's" or pitfalls etc I should watch for? I'm sure 260HP will keep me happy, but if fuel upgrades and valve springs got me a safe 300 (or close to) i'd be a happy man. Ideally i'd like some sort of boost controller to keep it to 4psi or so for commuting, and maybe 7 or 8psi for drags. Obviously brocks clutch mod will be a must do mod also.

This is one option i'm looking at for a "new" bike (S1000RR, Tuono, Superduke, GSXS1000 and a few other options also, but leaning towards the 14 due to comfort). >15yrs experience owned a few 1000's before, supermotos pretty much everything but a cruiser. Did trackdays (fun) and drags (also fun) but drags are more accessible for me as I can do it at night so doesnt interrupt life as much as a whole day or so at the track.

Anyway, all help / experience / opinions appreciated!

You might get some input from others but i would PM Romans. I know he doesn't always have time to follow the forum diligently but he'll reply ASAP if he gets a PM.
