Dilemma - Tune V Suspension
08/13/15 5:33 AM

I have a dilemma. Yesterday, after a solo ride, I stopped into a local performance bike shop to ask about setting my suspension. He recommended me to someone else, but we started talking about a tune. I don't need more power but he said that would come but he also talked about ride ability, smoothness and throttle control amongst certain things. I decided I needed it and could work out a way to fund it. It a very reputable shop run by an ex bike racer.

Then, later that day, I got a call from a suspension guy I had been recommended and that I had left a message for a few days earlier. I asked about having my stock suspension tuned for me. He said that would be simple but my size and weight, and the fact I intend on keeping my bike for a long time, he recommended a bigger spring as a band aid solution but highly recommended a hand built shock, tuned for me and my requirements. I decided I needed it and probably could fund it.

Dilemma is, in the short term, I can't do both. Both are a similar cost and the benefits of both are apparent.

What would be the priority. I'm thinking the suspension but maybe tune the factory equipment and get the tune??

I've read many times that suspension setup / tune makes the biggest difference in a bike.

But then I've never done that or an engine tune.

Personally I'd do the suspension first, it's the weakest point of the bike. Then later do a tune. It's not like the 14 needs more power and stock the powerband is pretty good as is.

Hand built shock tuned for you?????

Sounds awfully expensive, what about an aftermarket shock?should be more affordable.I would be searching the net!

Hiya Aussie..hope all is well.I have here an OHLINS rear shock..the factory one that comes with the EURO bikes. It needs a 'recharge' is all.Otherwise,it's fine.Has the external adjusters with it.PM me if you're interested.

I'd have to agree the tune is not a necessity. But a suspension upgrade...that's good thing to do...although it really doesn't need that either. This OHLINS shock takes up where the factory suspension stops.

Overall the suspension mods will probably make the biggest difference on that bike. 14Rs have excellent stock fueling and engine performance, literally none to very little noticable difference.

Unless you are a big boy the Gen 2 doesn't need different springs, just good tires and proper suspension setting for your riding style.

Thanks for all your input.

I am 6'5" and 125kgs (about 300 pounds?) so I can imagine some sort of adjustment is required.

I will do the stock settings for now. I do like the idea of having the suspension done properly, especially considering the bike is a long termer. A mate had his Ducati Diavel done recently with a custom shock and suspension and reckons it makes the world of difference. Cost wise, being Ducati, he spent more than 4 times what I have been quoted for a hand built shock!!

A little update today. Decided to go with a well known suspension tuner who installed new fork and rear springs and set the rest of the factory gear for me. Found it has made things much more tied down and stable. Can't wait for a longer ride.

Did he set the sag with you on the bike in full gear - hopefully he did if he is indeed a good suspension shop.

Don't be afraid to adjust/change the suspension settings such as compression and rebound, they make a big difference. For fast, track like riding firming up the setting makes a big difference from sport touring or easy riding settings. Keep a record and make small changes.
