Lock-up Clutch and HD springs
04/22/16 9:09 PM

I've recently learned that HD clutch springs are required for boosted engines but can be advantageous even for an NA engine. My goal is to be running the maximum shot of nitrous with a stock engine by next summer. I think this will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 70~80hp. I don't need anything for launch control, just something to keep the clutch from slipping under spray.

I will be installing an EVO shift star soon so I wonder if I should also plan to upgrade the clutch at the same time. Should I at least go with HD springs or should I go all the way to a lock-up clutch ...or should I do both?

Here's a pic of a multi-stage clutch just for fun. I'd love to put this beauty in but I'm sure its far beyond my needs and way out of my budget.

Rook are you looking at a Hays ??? OMG,,, Nooooo. Street bike starting with 30 or 40 shot springs is all you need. We have pulled 250 260 hp on springs with shims alone. If you going slider for track that's a whole different ball game. Put it this way 2 Grand is a lot of Doe. Or 60 bucks for springs. Street bike or track bike ?

Curious what your plans are for your baby girl ? Do tell. I will look for springs here, I know I have lots, but what are they ? If I find something you can use there yours.

699 start here

It's a fast street bike for doing race speed from time to time. No need for ultra competitive launches. A multi-stage clutch seems like it would be horrible for street use if it was set up for racing. A multi-stage clutch would be good for only one thing--RACE LAUNCHING.

I just need to harness all the power I can especially when on the NOS. I think you posted a pic of your lock-up clutch in the past. It was this one, wasn't it?
MTC $420
That would grab as hard as the $699 MTC you linked...but it doesn't grab in stages for high rpm launches...which I can't really use anyway.

So HD springs are enough you say? That's good because that is much more in my budget and a lot easier to install. Since it seems that clutch springs come in different rates, let me do some investigative work on what's available to suit my needs. If you got what I need, I'll buy yours.

Seems like the consensus on bikeland a few years ago was that Adams made the strongest springs. ..and $5 cheaper than Brocks. $55

Rook I am currently running 2 Stage Lock Ups from MTC. One Bike held 445hp with ease. The Other 280hp. With Brock Springs and all the shims started slipping at 270hp. Running MTC 2 stage with all the weights added no idea what they will hold. Lots that for sure. Pulling the clutch in becomes the job.

Pics show you don't have to spend allot of money to hold the numbers your talking for a street bike

Rook this is what I am currently running in Both Turbo Bikes Click

Sadly, I sold the middle bike. Fellow Forum member here has my baby. Very Glad She has a gone to a good home.

That one has 6 arms. The 2 stage I linked has 5 arms. Yours seems to work with the stock cover. I imagine any multistage clutch requires a cover modded or designed for the extra depth. The 2 stage lock-up clutches look a lot lighter too. The Multi-stages have a thick hub as well as the outer ring with the arms.

...but anyway, I won't be needing anything more exotic than a HD spring kit. I just wonder if Adams are too stiff? If Brocks is adequate, I'd much prefer a clutch lever i can pull without too much force.

With Brock Springs and all the shims started slipping at 270hp.

"All the shims" means you stacked as many shims on each spring as what came with the kit, right? These shims are like washers and you can stack fewer for a softer clutch or more for a tighter clutch?

Any way you can describe the feel of the clutch lever with Brocks springs / all shims compared to stock springs?

One practical advantage of 580 hp is never having to replace the front tire. Ever. Period.

Yeah man if you ride on the street a lot and you're just worried about spring pressure just see if you can find a single stage lockup. It's simple and will give you all the spring pressure you need.

Hello. My 2008 ZX-14 has 49 k miles and was not previously used for drag racing and no boost, will be going with NOS very soon. I have these Adams clutch springs with spacers.

Do the spacers go in the well of the pressure plate first? OR do you put the spring in first, then the spacer on top, then the washer/bolt? I know Brock's has the spacer on top of the spring under the washer/bolt but Brock's is designed to keep the spring centered. These are not designed to do that.

I have some wear in the wells from the stock springs so I’m wondering if putting the spacers under or on top of the springs would have any +/- impact on future wear. I've emailed Adams Performance but thought I'd see what you guys thought.

The Adams Heavy Duty clutch springs are supposed to be the strongest on the market. There is no exact data on this except people saying there HD springs hold X hp but one guy said "I think Adams are a little stronger".

I don't have any extra hp yet but the springs are in and the clutch is not much harder than it was with stock springs. I would not worry about that if you can handle the stock clutch lever you'll be fine with HD springs.

Slight change of issue question...will a gen2 tranny and clutch work on a gen1?

No idea. I didn't notice any angle in the teeth as though they were conical (as Hub mentioned on your other post) but if it were only a slight cone, I probably wouldn't notice that. You might investigate using a Gen1 clutch with Gen2 parts added to covert it to a slipper clutch. I think it is only a spacer. Watch Brock's HD clutch spring install in a Gen2.

The crankshaft gear probably comes off the crankshaft. If it's a cone shaped gear on the Gen2, you might be able to swap it over to a Gen1 crankshaft and then use the Gen2 clutch basket.
