I think I may have just gotten a great deal or screwjob
08/02/11 12:13 PM

So I have this RV I'm fixing up but I want to trailer my bikes behind it. I purchased one of the last el cheapo trailer kits where $200 gets you an axle, hubs, 1090lb springs, lights/wiring, hardware and a bunch of steel struts that can be replaced with 2in square tubing from the iron supplier. I had done this for my first trailer which was a little 40X48 incher I got from Meijers(grocery store in my area) for about the same amount, and over the years it has turned into a big mobile home axled flat bed I tow my buggy around on.

Well now it's too tall for my bikes as well as heavy so I'm a gonna weld up a new one.
So I plan on using this kit; cut the axle and weld in 12inches more width while beefing it up at the same time, maybe replace springs with 2000# units for $30, weld up a new 5 x 8 foot deck out of 2in square tubing and some smaller for reinforcement, and then a deck (prolly wood) with some sort of system for tieing down. I spent nearly $60 on heavy iron channel intending for the tires to ride through them and just skip the deck and keep the trailer light. But after getting them home and some closer inspection of my bike I realized I was hasty and they weren't wide enough for my tires and they gonna actually be heavy as hell because I was gonna have three rails. Back to the drawing board and a wood deck of some sort but there was still the problem of how to strap down the front end. Well I've never been a fan of ratchet straps on front forks, so I started looking at some pictures of the Condor front wheel stand so maybe I could fab one up for myself. Then I started to check out prices for them to see if it was cost effective. They are generally close to $200 a peice.
Low and behold I find a website that is selling them for a little more than a trip to Taco Bell with your girl and her mom! I ordered two. Now, I don't want to say where I got them from because I don't want to play with anyone's emotions as I'm expecting an email from them saying, "sorry, Bub, we had the wrong price up there, here's your money back" and then everyone would be mad at muwha. But if I get them I will share. And this may help someone else needing something nice who can't afford it, like muwha! lol

With this I will be able to neatly carry both my sportbikes in safety and style behind 'Chitty chitty bang bang'! Yes, my wife named the RV. Isn't that just awesome.... ugh

Well that didn't take long. They already refunded the money. Gave a weird explanation though.

Hello,

The moto stand you ordered has been discontinued from our warehouses. I apologize for the inconvenience and your order has been cancelled and refunded.

Thank you.

Thanks for the tip. I checked and they are 69.99 ATM which is still cheaper than building one. I priced it out last night to make one from aluminum stock and it'd be about the same plus running around and labor.

Actually after looking at the harbor freight, I see how cheap it's put together and I think I can do better.

I still have the trailer I built from a kit from Texas in 1989. I bolted it together and took it to a hole-in-the-wall welding service, and they welded it all so no more bolts. They also changed the spring mounts and added extra cross pieces and gussets.

Trailer has been fantastic, they must have got everything lined up right.

Anyway, its also too tall to safely put a bike on or off without two people, one on each side.

To solve that, I used to back the trailer up to the curb (had moved the license plate to the brackets that hold the turn and stop signals, out of the way) and then I could just ride the bike on and roll it off easily. Got my ATV on it that way too, even though I had two ramps available.

+1 saw that yetsreday while shopping for a compressor. Go git ya one ...or two. not as good as the Condor but for $$$ you can't beat. Been hearing praises of the HF wheel chock for years. It works. Just not a soretty as something more spensive.

I hear the best system for transport securing is the pit bull trailor restraint. bar goes through rear axle and then levers up like a rear stand. Bolts tro trailor bed. Saw one at track day and the guy showed me how it worked . NIce. but $$$$$$ ~300

Hey, Muwha--I borrowed a Condor from someone at my track day (Because they make you zip tie the side stand if you have one). It worked fine. Was able to get the bike in by myself. I could even sit on it in the chock but it did seem a bit tippy.--like the bike was tilted. The guy who lent it o me even stopped in his tracks and gave it a good long look. No problems with it but I would hope for something a little tighter is all. Maybe that is asking more than one should of a wheel chock. Never tried any other than the Condor. Ask opinions out there online B4 you buy.

Moi. (pardon your french, en effet!).

The smaller (and looks like better to me) wheel chock at HF is on sale for 39$. The larger one like the Condor--that is on sale for $69. Don't know when the sale is over. I made it on the last hour of the sale on the pancacke compressor I got today.

Come to think of it, I did sit on a S1000 in a Condor this week. It felt very stable. No slop at all.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I just checked out the smaller HF chock and even though for most people $40 is a drop in the bucket, I can't resist welding up my own. That smaller one is even simpler which reaffirms my belief that the condor isn't rocket science and I can make a couple prolly for free if I'm patient and get lucky with some free scrap metal from people I know. Some carefully bent flat stock and a few pieces of angle and throw in some grade 8 bolts and I got myself a Crusher chock LOL

Not to mention they're on backorder which for HF usually means discontinued until further notice...

I have used a 5' 4x4 with a large eye hook on each end. Attach this to a half sheet of plywood. Roll bike onto plywood. Run tie down from each hook to handle bar. Have used this in an enclosed trailer for over 2000 miles. Did not strap the "chock" to anything but the bike. When I used it on flat bed, ran tie downs from hook to trailer also. No damage from over 4000 miles. It was very cheap for parts. Still have it in carport just incase.
