Hub.......
06/24/17 10:15 AM

Hubmeister, this is second oil change on my new Ducati 959 at 3086 miles, some obviously ferrous slivers stuck to the magnetic drain plug.

Anything to be concerned about here?

Normal break-in debris. Possible:
Machining process leftovers.
Transmission sheer of gears - tooth length (if cleaned) laid out, note color of metal.

Not:
Rod bearing material.
Roller bearing letting go.

Trans shifting more precise, shorter throws than a big4 say? Miss a few shifts? >> Gear mesh breaking off the edges. If no missed shifts, I still see gear high-spots being sheered off = Normal wear. The giveaway is the straight length of the cuts.

Quikshifter. Now I don't feel so bad about seeing a few chunks after using my HM. That's ashitton more than I ever saw but my gears were worn in some previously so ---IDK? Yoo'd think Ducati would know how to make it's own quickshifter.

If it gets less with age, I wouldn't worry about it. No way I'd give up using a quikshifter even if it means replacing gears down the road.

The DQS or Ducati Quick Shifter was also my first thought along with normal break in metal shavings. I wiped all that mess off the drain plug with a paper towel and 95% of it was what I call black paste, superfine steel wear particles that form a kind of black mush. I picked out as many of the slivers as I could see on the towel with a tweezer and here they are with a ball point pen for reference. I'm guessing Hub is right, just normal wear in from closely fit parts becoming intimate for the first time. I'll check again in about 3000 miles and see if it settles down. The oil pan had the usual aluminum sparkles from the clutch basket and some flecks of red paint I'm not sure from where.

Hmmm Rook, that longest sliver on your drain plug looks suspiciously like the largest one on mine, I'm guessing a gear tooth gave that up, the rest of mine was pretty much just the fine iron paste that I expect on a new engine with only 3000 miles.

I do remember having black paste but mostly larger pieces. after changing the oil, I didn't use the qs at all. next oil change still had steel but smaller pieces. It eventually went away. Takes a while to clear everything out. the amount of steel coincided with how much the qs was used. Will be interesting to see what is in the oil pan this winter. I do miss gears with mine occasionally and I think that is what does it. Went to EVO shift star and plan to convert to GP shift.

Do you pay extra for that with the sexy Italian bitches, these cheap Jap bikes don't include that option?

Rudy, DQS is standard with the 959 along with EBC, ABS and 8 level traction control. About the only thing you don't get is an auto blipper, single sided swingarm and TFT instrument display, those are standard on the 1299S and pretty much de rigueur these days with all top level sport machines including the new stuff from the Japanese sans the single sided swingarm. My 2016 ZX-10R is equipped almost exactly the same as the 959 only ABS was a $1000 option and the TC is five level. The auto blipper is also available with the optional race kit from KHI. Times are a changing for sure but I still find my trusty, old analog '06 ZX-14 will keep up with the best of the new literbike breed on the twisty back roads I frequent. It still comes down to about 90% the rider and his knowledge of the road. I've never tracked the 14 but I'm guessing it would fare pretty well there as well if properly setup.
