Posting pictures in the forums
02/19/09 9:01 AM

UPDATE 3/5/2010: The method described below works for images that you've uploaded to an image hosting service like photobucket.com. An easier method of posting pictures to the forums is described in the first message here.

Here are some instructions for posting images in your forum messages.

  1. Find a website that lets you upload images and that hosts them for you. Many of our forum members use Photobucket. You'll need to sign up by entering a username and password and then confirming your registration by clicking on a link in an email they will send you.
  2. After you get signed up and logged in, you should see a box containing "Upload Images & Video". IMPORTANT: If your image is high resolution, in the "Reduce to" select list choose "800x600" (if your image is horizontal) or "1024x768" (if it is vertical). Then click the "Choose files" button in that box.
  3. A file upload dialog box will open (if you're using Windows, anyway -- don't know about Macs). Select one or more files to upload.
  4. The files will upload to the Photobucket servers.
  5. After the upload is complete, you'll see a page that lets you add titles, descriptions, and tags. None of this is necessary. Just click "save and continue" on this page.
  6. You will be returned to the "Upload Images & Video" page, and you should see a thumbnail of the image you uploaded. Hover your mouse over this thumbnail and a small popup box will appear. Click in the textbox to the right of "IMG Code" and press Ctrl-C on your keyboard to copy the code that's in the textbox to your clipboard.
  7. Compose your forum message and at the position where you want your image to appear, click the "Picture" icon at the top of the edit box, press Ctrl-V on your keyboard, and click "OK" in the "Picture" popup box.

The code you copied from the Photobucket page should end up inside the img tag in your message. Probably best to leave a blank line above and below this tag for a bit of space. Save your message and you should see your image in it.

The reason for the "Reduce to" thing is that the forum's message windows can only accommodate images 800px wide or narrower. Images wider than that will have the right side cut off.

If you want to test the process before posting a message with a photo, please use the "Test Section" area (at the bottom of the list on the home page). This area will be cleaned out around the first of each month. -bg

Is this the only way to upload photos? I work/live in Afghanistan 8 Months out of the year and Photobucket is blocked over here. Is there an alternate way I can use? Thanks!

You can upload pics to the forum. The "How To" is here:

"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!” HST

Thanks DogoZX,

That route seemed to work just fine, but I had to resize pics to a lower ratio than recommended. Think it has something to do with the restrictive firewall in place on the network here in Afghanistan. Hopefully, I can post pics of the ride soon!

1. On the browser that is open now, hold down the Ctrl key then tap N for New browser. One browser is for the vid page, the other browser is for the 14 page. Go to the subject you want the video to be shown. 14 general or wherever you feel like it should be in some subject title on the main page of the site, meaning.
2. You now have both your vid page and the 14 pages open so you can switch back and forth with the cut and pasting.
3. At the top of the video page, blue line the 'http://www.here is my vid.com' line. To do that, just roll the browswer over the address line in the white bar, or left click the address bar once and the address will turn blue.
4. See how you can capture that www.com address line two ways? One, you roll the mouse over the line, hit ctrl+C? Or, go up to the thin white address line, click the mouse and the line turns blue. We got that so far?
5. Now that the blue line is hot to be copied, click Ctrl+A then click C without letting up on the Ctrl key. Still stay in that blue bar with the mouse courser when tapping both letters.
6. Go to the 14's browser page, enter the subject box with the mouse courser and click the left mouse so you made the subject box [panel layer] hot to transfer your address.
7. Click Ctrl + U. This is for underline, but you are going to enter 'rl' to the brackets so it now reads [url] at both ends of the brackets. Just using the U alone, the address will be underlined, not the address being hot to the touch.
8. Move the courser back in the middle of the [url][url] brackets you modified. Hold Ctrl, click V. This now brought the vid address in between the brackets. The video is now hot to the touch. This is the quick and dirty address. To make the video hot the second way is with the subject screen showing the video. This is a little bit more involved. Try this dry run first.

Hey Hub. Many thanks......but.....my video is on a usb drive. It's something that I recorded with my camera. Do I need to upload it first or is there a way to just transfer it from the usb to our site? Sorry. ...I'm a newbie.

RE: Posting pictures in the forums

No prob. I learned the hard way. So no, can't drop it on the site. You have to chase the http address after you download the video from said sources.

1. When the thumb drive is sitting in the computer, the program is up on the screen, look for the movie file. Mouse over the file, right click it. If a window opens up, says, "SEND TO," then look for the drill down lines to say 'movie maker.' Then I believe the movie program will pop up next? If this did not occur, go to step 2.

2. Go to lower left of the screen which I believe is called the task bar> Click 'Start' - Run - type in the run address - moviemk - Press OK. At the top line, this is called the menu bar. That's the bar that says, File - Edit - Help - Etc. So at the menu bar, click File. The drop down window appears, click 'Import' and you will be asked to choose the letter files, so look for your drive letter and click that.

3. That says, I have my thumb drive in the slot, but I have to now find my thumb drive again? That, or pull the card, reinstall the card, the drive letter window pops up, says what drive and more info... I hope we loopholed that or I'll redirect you another way. Right now, these are 2 ways to open either the drive or movie maker.

4. We should now see both the drive browser call it and movie maker. Right now, you should be seeing the movie file being downloaded or you may need to click on the video, not the file. Unless moviemk recognized the program, we are going to now try a drag and drop if it did not load itself via clicking file and moviemk took over the rest.

5. Remember, both programs are layered over each other, so you have to click either layer to see either the drive or movie maker. To drag and drop, we need both windows over each other or separated from each other. So at the very top of this post you are reading, go up to the very top of the browser and practice this. You now double click on the very top blue line, meaning, find a clean spot to mouse over the blue line, now double click. This now shrunk page. Now, hold the mouse again over the blue line, hold the left mouse down, now drag the browser page around: never letting up on the left mouse key. To make the page fit the screen again, double click on the blue clear space again.

6. This shrink trick should be used with both pages... IF... The drive page takes up the whole screen, meaning. If you double click one only, you set both in position next to each other. You are now about to drag and drop your camera vid onto the movie maker program. This is so it can transfer that camera video to load onto youtube/photobucket/others. Plus, you have the option to edit the video, add text, etc.

7. I think if you went to photobucket, you could just drag it to the page and forgo movie maker. Most likely it will drop and drag onto youtube as well. The trick is to double click that top blue line so you can drag and drop to the next browser. The mouse is over the file or video. The left click is down. This now will drag the file/movie over to the other browser so you can drop it where they show the designation block you need to drop it in or see a red ring with a single cross thru it saying it won't drop here. Keep dragging till it returns to the right icon. You'll figure it out.

Recap:

A. Drag and drop one file into one program of said choosing, but lacks a better edit using movie maker.
B. Double click the blue line so you can drag the file to the [other] selected shrunken browser.
C. Know you have many options to perform the [same] operation in two ways [or more], so this is just one example.
D. Know the long way is to click file on the menu bar and follow the steps.
E. Know you can drop and drag from screen to screen and perform the option faster.

Hub , you have been very generous with your time. Many thanks man.

Luckily I have my 16 year old daughter...she is pretty tech savvy and will sort out your instructions.
Thanks again.

A movie type maker comes with a windows or apple application... Whichever you are using. If you have XP, you'll need those updated 'service packs.'

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/get-movie-maker-download

So before you find out you need it at all, go look at the very lower left of the screen. See where it says "start" with the windows log? Click that.

At the bottom of the right column that popped up, see where it says "Run" with a page logo next to it? Click that.

The Run window now pops up. See where it says "Open:" and there is a type box inside Run popup? Use all low caps and type, "moviemk" in the address line. Click OK.

Either a chime comes on, says you have hit a non-address line you typed, or an hour glass pops up and now wait for the movie program to open.

Said another way:

Start - Run - moviemk - OK. That is 4 steps at the lower left of the screen. I know that feeling being lost around the computer, but if you look at 4 clicks another way? This is nothing more than one step, can't overstep a step. So the sequence is part of the game getting there. I think there are more than 2 ways getting there and we more or less walked backwards but never missed a step getting to start movie maker 2 ways.

_______________________________________________________________________________

I took a guess on some of the steps above, thinking you could see movie maker on a popup. Not so. My mistake in memory. So I warmed up XP and walked the steps getting to moviemk. The walk is something for her to try?

I have only my desktop open, no browsers or programs showing down at the taskbar. I popped in the card. I now see at the top of the windows popup, "Removable Disc (G:)" and a drilldown of program selections. Near the bottom, I want to see "Open folder to view in win expore" and I click OK.

I now click on "DCIM" and click on the next folder. The video appears. I left click over the video and drag it to an open spot on the desktop.

If I open movie maker and it takes up the whole screen, I double click the top blue line so it shrinks.

I now take the movie that was dragged to the desktop and drag it to the white box of movie maker.

Said another way:

Install card - Open with Win-ex - Click DCIM - Click next folder - Drag movie to desktop - Drag movie to white pallet on shrunken movie maker's program - Release left click - Wait for download to appear.

Short of inserting the card and releasing the mouse click, we have 5 steps that follow another sequence to get us from the camera card to movie maker. See if those steps work for either of you? You'll be a left/right/drag/drop/shortcut king. If we took another direction in steps, you'd be looking at that hourglass for way too long.

I asked that years back. The answer was No. It gets pretty packed with old pics that would be better if the pics could be rearranged to make them easy to find but that's not possible. Either add one on every time you use it or start naming the pics after the thread you started. That's what I do. It's still so much better than Photobucket.

Your welcome, rostant. Here's an update. Photobucket went from free to pay to play. Google photos are free. Daughter can show you the photo/audio files, then drag and drop onto that browser page. Since you will sign up either way for utube or goggle photo, google owns youtube. You simply sign up for either one you get both. Just use the one made up name and password to enter.

To see if you have moviemk, go to a vidoe or photo, mouse over the photo/vid, right click, the drill-down window box will say 'open with >' and the arrow shows a few options. So if it says 'movie maker' click that and moviemk pops up. If you have win8 and below, it's there. Win10, they discontinued it.

Welcome and good luck with daughter's help.
