Power commander or not.
08/08/17 7:06 AM

Hi,

Hoping someone can help me out. Just purchased a 2010 with Jardine RT-5 carbon fiber exhaust to replace my aging ZZR1200. Bike runs fine but lots of backfire on compression.I have not looked at the plugs yet. Don't know anything about PC. Whatis needed to prevent the decel pop? How difficult is it to put a PC5? Plug and play? Need autotune? Anything else? Anyhelp is appreciated

I put a 325 grain .50 AE slug in the hose between the Pare valve and the air box with a pair of hose clamps to keep it from getting sucked into the airbox. Help a bit but not 100%.

^^^Yes, that will reduce the popping by about a third and that might be as good as you get. I used a wooden dowel and hose clamp. You can take the whole PAIR off and put blockoff plates on there, too. Same effect. Some maps will pop less. Romans map popped a bit less. So, YES, a PC5 might help somewhat if you can get ahold of a map that focussed on this. It's 0 throttle about 3000 rpm where you get the popping. AutoTune might help a little more over a map. I Autotuned my 08 and it still pops but it does it less than ever now I'd say the map and Autotune toned it down another 10%. The popping is controllable with the throttle but I remember before I did the PAIR block, it was just crazy. Too much even for me and I like the sound.

Now, if you had a flash, you'd be stuck. You couldn't run a map on top of flashed fueling unless you could find a map for your flash which would probably be almost impossible. You'd have to try to get it reflashed or dynotuned.

Try the PAIR block first. If that doesn't quiet it down enough, I'd suggest a PC5 and Wideband2 if you have the time to figure those out. A flash is good but it won't work to resolve tuning refinements unless you get Woolich software and you'd still have to figure those out.

I have Romans flash which removed my decel pop totally (removed pair and blocked air box hole) and run the PC5 without an issue.

^^ YES< you CAN use a PC5 with a flash but "how" is not so simple. If the fueling is already changed from stock and you want to try different fueling, you can't just throw in another map. You have to use AutoTune to change your fueling safely or else get a dyno tune /reflash.

I'm not dissing flashing. I just have never quite been convinced it is better than modules for all the things modules can do....and modules are made so you can change the mapping to your hearts content where flashing is do or die. Even a lot of flashers recommend a PC5 with their flash. For a Gen1, I honestly don't see a real advantage to using a flash unless you don't want to mess with all the work of installing and learning to self tune. I'd have to try it but so far, what I know about how mapping works, a flash is just a less expensive and quicker way to do it without needing to do any work installing. That is a very nice package for a lot of owners but it's a step away from perfect unless you have the same mods that the flash was created with. All these years people have been looking for a map to match there exact pipe and now that everyone is flashing, nobody cares what full system the map was created with?? If you ever want to go with a turbo or NOS, you darned well better know what the timing was flashed to or have that put back to stock so you can take care of timing yourself.

This is the only bike I've heard of popping once the pair has been blocked off, why is that?

Eurodog enviromental wackos forcing KHI to architect fuel/timing maps and as such snap crackle pop. My '06 pop went away after the dyno-tune and the BBW never had one

My busa still pops after the PAIR was removed. Not nearly as easily as the 14 though. You eliminate the extra air but the fuel is still there and pipe is big enough to hold air without the pAIR pumping more in. The pipe might even suck air in when you decel.
