Helmet Lock
02/05/15 6:21 PM

I bought Kawasaki genuine helmet lock for 2012 ZX14R. I re-key the lock so that I can use my ZX14R's key. Installation was supposed to be no brainer but I had to make a small hole on the frame. Anyway I am happy that I don't have to carry my helmet when I go shopping.

You mean the 14r doesn't come with a stock helmet lock? They have the space there in the frame...?

I know what you had to drill. That little hole for the positioning peg on the back of the lock.

I can't believe they would make a space on the frame for a helmet lock and decide to not put a helmet lock on it. I used mine pretty often when I had it on the bike. It's a good practical thing for short trips.

I suppose a used Gen1 lock would fit. Those should be cheap on Ebay.

Hi Rook,

Space there in the frame? Yes there are some space but I don't see no helmet locks. Besides, I don't want to remove the seat every time I hook my helmet. The helmet lock I bought was $35 and it is convinient especially since I can use ZX key. and yes, I had to make the small hole for the positioning peg.

Not quite as convenient as a helmet lock, but I use a 4 foot piece of vinyl coated cable with the two free ends swaged together. I make a loop thru the chinbar, unlock the seat, place the swaged end over one of the pegs, then lock the seat back down. I made the cable long enough to also go thru the arm of my jacket if I don't want to carry it. When I'm not using the cable I coil it up and keep it under the seat. Have used this method on several other bikes that didn't have helmet locks and never had a problem.

I am very interested in this, you say it's a genuine Kawi accessory but I don't see it listed in their website. How/where did you find it?

Runnerhiker,

I bought the lock while I was in Japan for business, but you should be able to get it through Kaw dealers in US. The lock is for 2012 ZX14R. Here is a pic of the box with Kaw p/n.

The 14r has a lock but its not convenient. There is a bolted down wire/cable under the seat that you can hook your D-rings to and then lock the seat again. This was a topic of complaint when the first 14r's were getting press.

Runner,
I would say calling a dealer will be the easiest way to find it. My dealer had access to several Euro 14r parts that I couldn't find anywhere, short of www.ebay.co.uk. Then you had the hassle of shipping over seas with the seller.

I contacted my local kawi dealer and that part number did not work. Old are you sure its for a 2012 and not a 2011 or earlier 14. When i read this thread i was like right on i need to get hooked up with that lock. I traded my 11 for a 13 pulled the trigger but did notice no helmit lock on the 13.

rook why would you remove it from the bike? I hate carrying or setting my lidd on the seat, also never set my helmet on the fuckin ground. rook have you seenem on ebay?

So THAT'S what it's for. Was wondering about that thing...

Hi guys,

The lock is for 2012 ZX14R and fit my 2014 with an additional hole for positioning. I wonder if Amazon.com can get this somehow.

OlmMan

Thanks for the info, I am going to my dealer Tuesday to see if he can get it. I removed the dummy plastic cover and it looks like my bike has the positioning hole already drilled. Does the kit come with the parts needed to key to my ignition? Or did you have to go to a locksmith?

Hi Runnerhiker,

Depending upon your model year, you may need to relocate the positioning hole. Kaw genunie helmet lock comes with a 2 set of Kaw keys (exactly same key tpye - thickness and length - as our ZX keys). You can re-key the lock so that you can use your ZX key. All you need is a couple of small screw drivers and a lot of patience. If you are not comfortable, you should take the lock (and your ZX key) to nearby locksmith.

If you dealer can't get it, you may want to contact Amazon.com. Amazon.co.jp is Amazon.com's subsdiary. Amazon.com should help you out.

Good luck!

My 2014 ZX has two hooks (one on right and one on right) in the middle. There is a couple of hooks sticking out from the gas tank but those are to secure the seat, I guess. No cables came with my bike to use those middle hooks as helmet locks. Those hooks are not useful especially if you are loaded during touring.

This is pretty similar to what I bought (in fact, this must be a knock off of OEM lock in Taiwan/China). The only thing is that it won't come with Kaw OEM keys. If their keys are the same size (length, thickness, and width), you can still re-key the lock to accept your ZX key, I believe. Otherwise, you need to carry a separate key for the lock.

My local dealer could not get it for me, it did not show up on his computer. I guess it's not available in the US. Too bad.

It's very frustrating to me that the Euro model has some neat stuff on it and for it that we seem not to really be able to get, or to get easily at any rate.

It seem to me that Mother Kawi thinks that all Americans want to do us run down the 1/4 mile. They don't seem to understand that unless I am going to the track that more than likely will want something on the back of my bike... you know, like luggage or a hottie with a naughty body
