Running hot????
07/26/16 5:40 PM

Hi Everyone!

I just moved to Vegas from San Diego. Obviously it is a little warmer here (110 today). Bike is running hotter, but don't know what too hot is. Gauge is one bar short of being pegged. And since there is no red zone on the gauge, I don't know what to think! It never ran that hot in San Diego. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I doubt you have gone down in elevation. 5 bars seems pretty friggin hot for highway speed but at 110 degrees, mightnot be too unusual. In the 90s here and my gen1 never gets to 5 bars unless it's just sitting with engine running.

So 3 bars in San Diego and 4 in Vegas the end of July? Seems about right. Some more experienced (read older) 14 drivers have said dont worry until the overflow is belching out coolant. Thats a definite overheat then.

Maybe a second fan and good cooling system flush/maintenance? Not a lot of options in the desert heat. I know there are a few 14 drivers in Scottsdale and Lake Havasu City that dont seem to have over heat issues. How about an airconditioned car? That would be my choice until it cools down.

full system. you'll probably see a bar less in most situations + cools off in a few minutes when you shut down.

Factory has a hot and cold environment tank, you'd think. How about I roast the bike in that little room and let it die, overheat at what temp, call the engineers in and revise. It had to do something today in that heat. Oh, it didn't? I'm not going to sell you a bike around the world without some homework... It's still an air cooled vehicle if no fan is running like a car all the time... Keep it moving... nothing to see here.

Once I'm going it's ok. Just sitting at red lights makes me nervous. Nothing spitting out yet, just getting very hot. Elevation is about 2200 I think compared to pretty much sea level at San Diego.

On my Gen 1 the fan is ALWAYS running when I'm sitting still. And it usually runs at 4 or 5 bars. Never had an overflow, never missed a beat in 3 years. Reminds me when the Ninja 900 first came out. People complained it ran too hot. So the next year they put a resistor in the temp gauge wire so the gauge showed cooler. No change to the bike at all. Just make sure your coolant is good and if you're worried put the second fan in.

I'm just getting into the whole tuning scene but 2000 feet is significant to fueling. Not dangerous but makes a noticeable change. You're in thinner air now and the AFR has leaned out some. Leaner is hotter. These bikes are set for about sea level I believe. If you have a PCV with a map for higher elevation, that might help.

Also, the lack of humidity might make some difference. You're sucking in pure air now instead of all that humidity in San Diego. Leaner would be the result, I guess. Just my thoughts. As I said, I'm just starting to delve into this realm.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will have it remapped, and do a radiator flush and put some something better than regular antifreeze.

How difficult is it to install a second fan?

I would do one or the other first so you know what worked.

Don't worry about it.

Worry about *you* if you're riding at 110.

I max out at 106 in Tucson (last week) before switching to cage.

Really, if the fan runs at the stop light (say, 2-3 minutes sitting at light), you're golden. If it does not come on, then fix *that*, and you'll be fine.
