What is this air filter and is it any good?
04/29/11 11:42 PM

I was pretty shocked to find a FOAM filter on my bike. The last time i saw a foam filter was on my shop vac. I cant believe they make them for a bike like ours, but i could also not know what i am talking about.
What are peoples thoughts on this filter? Is it any good?
Thanks for reading.

It looks filthy. How do you clean these? Do they require oil afterwards?

I found out it was a Pipercross filter

Are these any good?

11013-0014... Your price, $31.80

The Y with the ? logo says $85. Pie peer extra drop in HP is what I hear.

You can clean that with warm soapy water. Anything else will begin to decompose that material. Gear oil in the foam might do the trick to relube that kind of filtering system. Then again, the oil might weaken the same way.

Then again, dis is like an oil/tire thread. Takes a man card to buy OEM. Squids buy anything out there without ID. It'stamped on their forehead.

Best filter out there. Put it back in. My two cents. I have tried them all.

Looks okay to me.Wash with soap and water...ya...dry well...SPRAY some lightweight misting oil on there.(just to catch any dust particles).K&N has some of the "oil filter" spray available.

Can't say for sure-----I have a BMC Race Filter (that I never run) and I can tell you for sure yours is not a BMC. I believe that is a K&N filter.

The $/hp ratio is good on an after market filter. $100/hp is about what to expect to pay. My personal opinion is that for the extra 2 hp or less, it prolly is not worth using an aftermarket air filter unless you are racing.

The mapping adjustment for a BMC Race filter (My research lead me to chooose BMC for the best flow) is about nothing. The AFR +/- is so slight. The K&N must filter better than a BMC but flow is reduced. The BMC is like two pieces of overlapping screen.

I do not trust any after market air filter for every day use. I have an OEM in there all the time. I'll pop the BMC in for some heavy duty sport riding or track.

I would not use a high flow oil filter ever.

Viper,

I bought a brand new bike. I am going to change the scenario to this:

I live in the valley of dust storms. Inside the house, I want to eat more food than dust. DO EYE???;

1. Keep the door closed to keep the dust and grit down to as small a micron you can see with the naked eye (now peppers your salad).
2. Open the door, use the screen door, oh, the wind is kicking up, my salad must look like an old abandon castle with the cobwebs and dust so thick on the piano... Is the inside of my engine now being tossed like a salad all score my walls and crush down on some grit with valve finish is I'm finished.

Riiiiiiighttttttttttttt... Pet dirt be is I agree.

I might as well throw my 2 cents in... As soon as you said 'foam' I pictured 1970's dirtbike technology. Not a fan of foam. I would get a new filter anyway. Whenever I bought a used bike I always tossed out whatever the previous owner had in there even if it was an expensive K&N. You can be safe and go with OEM or you can put your trust in some of the aftermarket companies street style guaze filters. Ever since I put Pod filters on my 907 GSXR I have went with BMC. I just like the quality of their materials. Use whatever you like, I would just stay away from a race hi flow filter for a bike you'd like to keep around, and as for foam, it's good for washing dishes but not cleaning air IMO. You can never really be certain it's clean IMO.

Speaking of previous owners K&N filters Look what I did last night. It a spare airbox from my 907 I had laying around. I'm sure I'm the only guy in the county with a K&N sportbike filter on his air compressor.lol

Good one, Romes. Took that screen off and the bike ran smoother. Flow is black magic...

I picked up on that little tid bit of info 4 years back in one of your threads Hub. Screen removal was hidden in the code between the lines on page eleven under FLOW,,,,, but I got it. Lol

The dif is 3 oz. heaviest to lightest. I guess it is a good thing I got that 14 Ah Shorai battery instaed of the 18 Ah. Now I can justify pulling that boat anchor of a BMC around

I think I may try pulling the screen off the OEM just for kicks.
