Air flow in helmet
07/24/09 7:23 AM

On the 14 when cruising above 80 mph i get a lot of air that goes in my helmet from under the chin area unless I get in full tuck position. I have a Shoei helmet and it does not do this on my R1. anything under 80 mph I dont notice it. It makes it hard to see and impossible to ride faster without tucking down on the tank. I assume its the aerodynamics of the wind coming off the wind screen. I have the hotbodies windscreen that is 1 in higher than stock. Has anyone elso noticed this? I think maybe a windscreen with a curly lipped at the top may help this. I think the ZG sport touring screen may stop this but not sure I could get over the looks. Suggestions?

Not noticed that but then I never ride at 80 miles an hour, kind of like to get past that speed limit lol!. plus the helmet I use has that flap under the chin (Icon airframe).

If you want QUIET in a helmet, you might consider this one. It's not cheap, but it is the most awesome helmet I've ever seen. My son bought one recently.

They are made in Germany. There is a review here. -bg

I do have the flap under the chin peice for my helmet also but it doesnt seem to make a difference in or out on this bike. Its not the noise that bothers me though quiter is always better! I am 6 ft tall also. do you guys ride sitting up or in tuck position above 80? I ussually dont tuck until i am above 120 on my R1. If i sit far back on the seat I dont notice it as much but I like to hug the tank because I have short arms and I like to steer with my legs and keep the weigh off of my hands..

Do you guys wear ear plugs? I never used to, but my brother-in-law got me onto them and I riding every way as I do, hearing damage was going to be unavoidable in the long run. So I got into the habit and now I HATE it when I forget to put them in...I'll pull over and put them in, even on a short ride. I really enjoy the quiet...I can still hear my exhaust note (stock cans still for now) enough and it bring a certain peaceful, smooth sense to the ride. Great for touring too. I wear the disposable soft foam plugs.

So anyways, maybe wearing ear plugs might help or fix the problem? Shoei's (I have the RF1000) are noisy due to the great airflow through them.

Schuberth make the BMW helmets, which are the duck's guts. You get what you pay for...unforunately we can't (legally) get/wear Schuberth's here in Australia at present.

I dont always wear the ear plugs because they are a pain sometimes to take in and out but they make a huge difference.

That helmet above is awesome but OMG is it expensive.

I always wear ear plugs. However, with the helment above (I don't have one yet) they are totally unnecessary. -bg

how about an add on "skirt"? I haven't tried one, but I'm thinking about it.

I can tell a big difference with the taller zero gravity sport touring wind screen,,, if you dont mind it sitting taller,,, I think it looks just as nice.

$100 fixx right there. Otherwise, my helmet came with a chin screen that buttons on,, I dont use it, and I have no helmet issues,, Shoei here. Im also 6'-2".
