California Exhaust ??
04/23/14 8:39 PM

OK I heard some where that in CA, as of 2013 it's illegal to add a after market exhaust to new motorcycles unless it has a emission sticker? Is this true? I can't imagine being stuck with those big pipes on my zx14r.

Yes it's true, weather they enforce it or not is another thing ...

I think Yoshimura has compliant ones, but I am not sure, you might want to call them...

On a side note, some one on a local board in So. CA. Got a ticket for a court appearance for an
Exhaust, and it wasn't even a 2013 or 2014 ! I'm still trying to get the specifics ...

Hey guys just I'm joining this discussion very late and hoping you see this post. I'm in California and was wondering if these rules applies to years prior to 2013. I have a 2012 ZX14R I bought end of 2014 and finally ready to replace the stock exhaust....lol. I'm considering the Brock's Alien Head slip on. Any thoughts?

I haven't followed this thread but I'll tell you the same thing I tell everyone. Get a full system instead. If that's illegal in CA, that sucks. The real question is "do they enforce that law?"

Ca law is that after 2012 as in 2013 and up, the bike has to have stock cans. Thank the Fucking RINO Schwarzenegger for that turd. You will have to find an out of state supplier to ship you the cans or full system. I went with Yoshi cans only because if I do get tagged its a simple fix-it. Rumor has it if you get stopped for whatever, they will also include the illegal cans in the ticket. The Yoshi cans have a "for race use only" sticker on the inside of the can and if you peel it off there is a big yellow " ILLEGAL" stamp or something to that effect there.

Most of the aftermarket exhaust I have seen has the same "for racing only" disclaimer somewhere so I suspect these after market exhaust systems are illegal in a whole lot more places than just California.

Has anyone ever even heard of someone getting a ticket for a modified exhaust system?

On a similar note, here in Calgary they passed a bylaw making it illegal for motorcycles (yes, motorcycles ONLY) to be noisier than "X" decibels. Although this bylaw should have been to include all motor vehicles I still haven't heard of anyone getting a ticket for noise violations... but I also don't know anyone dumb enough to run WOT past an officer in 1st gear.

If my Muzzy cans say illegal or race only anywhere, I haven't seen it.

I'm not from CA but you can get an insert (or at least my Yoshi came with it in the packaging, now I know why) when put it in it sounds like stock exhausts. I only put it in to hear how it sounds, never rode with it in so cant comment on effect with regards to power etc. Also you can clean the illegal sticker off with some cleaning benzine without damaging the exhaust.

It is illegal to modify the OEM exhaust unless the newly installed muffler has the EPA sticker. I believe Yoshimura makes slip-on that complies with the law. All others are illegal. In SF Bay area, cops don't seem to care too much about the modified exhaust unless it is obnoxiously loud. If, however, you are stopped for speeding or modified tail lamp, you could get "fix it " ticket for the modified exhaust. I use Delkevic - quieter than most after market and cheap - and keep my bazooka in case I get fix it ticket.

Illegal, yeah, probably ... and if I ever get a ticket for 'em I'm just gonna have to consider it an add'l tax on the mufflers I really want.

These days it sure feels like we are all breaking some law every minute of every day.

I got ticketed twice for aftermarket exhausts here in Southern California.
First time I changed it got ticket signed off.
Second time didn't change a thing, had a Akro without a sticker.
Cop signed off never looked at pipe.
So I go for slip-ons instead of full systems, easier to comply if ticketed.
But link pipe and Akro muffler on my new "10" might be a give away, kinda Loud!
Also been ticketed for my Blue screen, and integrated turn signals.

integrated turn signals and lack of reflectors (due to the fender eliminator) are two key items COPS around here stop and ticket people. It is funny but more so than the loud muffler. My friend was fueling at a gas station and a motorcycle cop gave him a 'fix it" ticket for the fender eliminator. He had a couple of reflectors but those weren't complied to the code per policeman.

I have Leo Vince slip-on's. They have a marking on the exhaust but I don't remember what it says. I can look as the bike is probably on a boat somewhere and probably on it's side. I'm moving to Edwards AFB mid Sept and really don't want the stock cans on. Good thing I kept them if I have to mount them back on.

I'm a resident of KY and just looked at their DMV website. Does California have inspections centers? I can get an out of state inspection done on my vehicles and register them in KY. From what I remember KY doesn't have an emissions/exhaust rule.

California doesn't have inspection centers. Some police departments use db meter to check the exhaust noise. It really depends on cities/police department. I am no sure where Mic4 lives - California is a pretty big state. As long as it is the SF Bay area, he would be OK Brock's. I would make sure to keep the OEM just in case you get fix-it ticket.

I'll be at Edwards which is 2 hrs east of LA, but only 25 min from Willow Springs. Hopefully I won't have any issues.

Wildpete

You should not have any issues around Edwards. But, If you go up into the mountains nearby to ride around Wrightwood and Angeles Crest Highway (nice ride would be Wrightwood an ACH to Newcombs for lunch and back)be aware the CHP is heavy patrol all week, more than 5 mph over posted at your own peril, they can and do hide around every turn. And for the record the Tail of the Dragon is 1/5 as long and fun as ACH.

cruderudy - That's just crude and rude of you to diss the Dragon like that

Kidding of course, I'd love to ride the ACH some day. All thru CA in fact.

I will add that my 10 or so Dragon rides since '94 I've seen 2 cops, neither time ticketing, just strolling along. And the Dragon is so tight and twisty that you can actually have a pretty darn good time leaning your bike over nicely while barely breaking the speed limit.

I zoomed in to the ACH using Google Earth and it looks to be more stretched out, probably higher speeds needed to really push your bike?

Either way, both roads are light years better than anything we have here in Florida

ACH is on my list to do. I like to push it on the back roads here in England but will have to change it up probably for stateside riding.

Back to the OP topic: I was out for a drive in the 911 Sunday and went up a section in Palos Verdes on PV East Drive known locally as "the switchbacks." Local idiots on their GSXRs with open exhaust think no one will notice if they tear up and down them a few times late at night. Above and below the switchbacks are homes in the $3-6M range, Trump National is just down the road. Big Frickin lighted billboard sign there on Sunday - We Ticket For Illegal Exhaust. So yeah they are out looking in my area for nonstock pipes - I put my reflectors back on the BBW later that day.

Extra - as for the Dragon, its looks really nice!! Just kidding about ACH being better. ACH is great for 14's with lots of high speed sweepers you can really rip on, and the road surface is very, very nice. Its way to easy to be in triple digits in 3rd ... Learned my lesson the hard way, lawyer cost $3k to get me out of the ticket, now I'm a mph guy and +5 over is pushing it. I get passed all day long but no ticket in 4 years.

Wildpete, the section of road up from Palmdale into Wrightwood is nice also and Angeles Forest Highway was repaved last year and the surface is like a race track. Sounds like you will be helping out the USAF? and have your bike with you? If not, hey its LA, www.rentaducati.com. Weekend lunch at Newcombs about 25 miles from Wrightwood is one great big sport bike hang out.
