Airbox Inspection Plates
06/07/16 12:27 PM

Does anyone have a line on lightweight or light and seethrough airbox plates?
Gixxer1300R Polycarbonate Access Plates
Would be nice to find something like this, but even better if it could hold the stock thermometer (air temp sensor)..

VERY cool idea. You could make a set of those yourself if you have a dremmel and stand. Poly or thick plexi ought to work well. I ALWAYS find oil spray on the underside of my covers so it would get to looking messy but if you just want to drop some weight and see in the airbox, should work quite well. Thanks for the idea. Shane brings up the fact you will need to relocate your air temp sensor but I don't see why you couldn't drill a hole just like the OEM cap has and insert the grommet and sensor same as OEM.

Those do look like an easy weight loss idea and they look cool. I can see the problem with the temp sensor as the OEM plates have room for the sensor to be recessed. I don't think there is clearance with the flat poly plates. Shane mentioned several location options but didn't elaborate.

There is a hole at the bottom of the Gen1 air box about 13 inches below the LH cover. I can't remenber what was stuck in there to plug it but it was nothing important. Looked like they planned that hole into the design for people who wanted to run a NOS line. It is too small for the air temp sensor but could be drilled out. Kinda low in the airbox---about level with the ducts---don't know if that would be the best location for it to test air temp--or if it would matter much..

awful damned good to have some discussions about mods again. It's like 2008 again!

So, if you are getting oil, is it coming from the crankcase breather or throttle bodies?
I'm more interested in weight than an easy viewing port, I guess I could just trace these onto a thin sheet of carbon fiber? I wonder if the sensor could be mounted more deeply into a straight sheet? I'd think with carbon fiber and aluminum screws the weight could be cut down to 1/3 or so and give a little more airbox volume.
Shane listed the guys info that made those plates, but I'm not a member of that sight and I didn't see any recent info on the fabricator on my last search.

That would look cool. They do have a gasket though--or they're supposed to. You might do fine with a piece of rubber cut to the right shape.

I wonder if the sensor could be mounted more deeply into a straight sheet?

That would be the most appealing idea to me but you'd need to have some sort of tubular socket molded into the CF for the sensor to drop down.

Obsessive weightloss..LOVE IT!!

If you use aluminum screws, DO NOT LokTite these! They have rotating sleeves to help prevent over-torquing.

That would suck to get all those bolts stuck in the frame.. Thanks for the advice.

Are those access plates stamped steel or cast aluminium? What about flat thin aluminium plate and TIG weld a well to recess the sensor? Probably wouldn't need much to get the clearance needed.

The OEMs are aluminum. 13.30 oz w gaskets and grommet w/o screws.

Thin aluminum plates with well would work but so would a plastic tube epoxied to the clear ones.

Yeah had a fabricator over complicate it moment there Rook. Thanks for pointing out the simplicity of glue an plastic.

So, no one has any leads on the guy that originally made the parts for Shane? Guess I'll have to try ordering a couple sheets of carbon fiber to experiment with.
Does anyone have any links to cheap but high quality\light carbon fiber panels?
